Default Oil Weight In Upgraded Turbo Cars

Guys, my oil has been running somewhat hot lately ever since the gt52, and i called Jorge( my tuner) and he suggested changing to 10w40 VS what im using now (royal purple 5w30). on average my car runs between 210-240 on the street and i was wondering if any of you guys out there with big turbo setups run different weights or an external oil coolers?

240, eh? That's pretty damn toasty. Are you running an FMIC? I'm just wondering what, if anything, is perhaps blocking airflow. Is the water temp. elevated too?

If it were me, I'd run the heavier oil and install an aux. oil cooler. Hot summer days, especially in slow traffic is friggin' brutal.

I always ran 5w40 or 10w40 with the stock turbo. I never liked the recommended 5w30. With a bigger turbo I wouldn't even think of running a 30 weight oil. Just try out something a bit thicker and I think you'll see a big improvement.

Yep, running a APS DR525 FMIC....yeah the water temp was elevated alot....and I mean alot, it even got to 3/4 tempature mark on the bootleg cluster gauge...so, i got a koyo radiator and since then water temp consistently stays under 1/3 on the bootleg gauge

I run 5W40 and I'm completely stock. I made the switch from 5W30 to 5W40 because my mechanic recommended it for various reasons that I don't remember.

hi MK, i see my oil temp around 180 to 220 (edit, sorry I made a mistake here, it was farenheight not celsius) at the most. I'm using a dino oil right now, mobil 20W50. Will put Amsoil SAE 60 anytime soon. I have no plans of putting an oil cooler. I think the moroso oil pan is helping the cooling of my oil. If you do have extra time, pls visit my journal

Matt im going to suggest you try yourself some german castrol 0W-30

thicker than 5W-30 and provides better protection, like stated above proven to be a "somewhate" 40W or heavy 30W

I have motul 5-30 in my TS 30R sti, but I have a big Setrab oil Cooler and 2 qt accusump. At VIR two weeks ago, it was 93 and oil temps never went over 203. Water never went over 208. I would use 10-40 in a heatbeat, though, so go for it. And if you are really seeing 240, you need to do something because that is too hot, man.

i recommend shell rotella t 5w40...if u have no cats on exahust..i am running this more than years..and getting excellent UOA reportss everytime..
otherwise, like someone said above use gc 0w30

if you more care then do UOA for whatver oil you want to try next time..it's the only way to find out if your engine like the oil..

Kinda figured that...otherwise we'd be having this little discussion in the "built-motor" forum.

Try the heavier oil and report your temps. Frankly, I don't think that's going to do it, but it's worth a shot. You're just not getting enough airflow.

im going to try it and see how it does....also while im at it, i'm going to take all the paint i sprayed on to the a/c core off, maybe its changing the thermal dynamics of it, inpairing its ability to cool
