I am sorry, what did you switch from? So you went with the 10W-30 then? Keep us posted.

I was running 5w30 without any oil burned off (or at least not enough to notice). For the summer I switched to 10w30, nothing has burned off yet, but it's only been 2 or 3 weeks.

I bought the car used w 11k switched to mobil 1 5w30 then GC 0w30 (IIRC weight) and this past was the Amsoil High Performance 10w30. I again will be changing the oil tomorrow to Amsoil 10w30 High Performance. I have barely any burn unless really driving the car and only then it was only a splash as I am very OC w. oil level since I do drive the car. Only thing I have noticed is that the engine tick is a little louder but it just may be the car ( I misshifted 4th > 3rd by accident and the clutch was fully engaged then caught it. I didnt see the revs as I was caught of guard but the car seems to be running fine and I figure if something was wrong it have happened already)

Amsoil is on the more expensive side. I just paid 42 and change for 5 quarts of the 10w30 High Performance. Ill have to look into case prices as it may be cheaper. If you have any other questions or would like more info feel free to ask.

I tell you what, I get Amsoil for $6 straight a quart. That is cheap as heck. My member ship cancelled though because I haven't used it for a while but my friend has it (same price). Pay the $20 yearly member ship and become prefered. Then order really really cheap.

Thanks for mentioning the Preferred Customer program. I had completely overlooked that and have been paying retail for the last 6 to 8 years.

I've used castrol 5w30 dino up to 10k. At 10k, I started doing tracks which I switched to 5w40. I'm at 18k and so far I have not burned any oil even at the track.

Awsome Ry. I didnt know you had an account on here. Ive decided to keep my STI since insurance will be the same for an A4.

For clarification. Ryan at Area1320 was the one who suggested I switch. Glad I did. No burning at all. Well worth it

I don't understand why people use 10wXX. You'd want low pour point or low viscosity for cold start. The 5w30 works all year around. However if you drive hard or track your car (which we all do in some fashion), you'll want to increase the high temperature weight. So, in the summer I'll run 5w40 and in the winter 5w30 or 0w30 if I can any. Much of the engine wear occurs during start up when the engine is cold. So, you want an oil with low pour point to provide better lubrication. Plus, I saw somewhere in this forum or in nasioc 5w40 grade STI motor oil.

I think everyone wondering about motor oil grade should the motor oil stickie originally posted be AEHass. Here's the link:

Lots of people have no idea the way oil is labeled.

I actually just switched from Amsoil 5-40 to a Motul 5-40. At the track I run a straight 50 weight Amsoil.

I understand the viscosity ratings as you can see I was running the german castrol. I was suggested to try 10w30 as is designed for turbo motors. I may switch to the 0w30 or the 5w40 from Amsoil.I havent looked into Motul yet
