Exclamation Trying to Help buddie out... TUNING STI

Hey guys my name is Pedro Martinez Jr. I own an Evo 8 w/ some mods on it (ams 35r kit ). I came to this board to find help. Im not very familiar to it but hopefully its the same as EvoM that Im always on as I own an EVO.

First off My friend has an 064 STI. He bought the car w/ an FMIC, Upper and Lower IC pipes and Catback. I have personally tuned my evo a little bit and was wondering if i can tune his STI also as I have the Tactrix cable that connects to the Evo or Subaru's.

My friend was wondering what his next mod should be. I told him
A. Wideband
B. Fuel Pump 255 lph
C. Boost Controller
D. Downpipe *(uppipe i think its called for these cars..?)*

Where can i learn about tuning these cars or how they run or just get more information over them. Cause i know my evo came very VERY rich from the factory so i started there. Dont really know a whole lot about these cars....

** SORRY UP DATE HIS CAR IS AN 04 AN 04 NOT 06 **

Go to the tuning section of the forums and see what you can dig up.

Downpipe is for sure the next power mod that I would do to that car. The downpipe is the pipe that goes out from the turbo and connects to the mid-pipe/catback. The up-pipe connects the headers to the turbo. The stock up-pipe on the STi is catless and very efficient so you wont get much out of upgrading that piece.

I'm moving this to th Engine Forum for now.

You should have your friend join us here. While I agree with the downpipe suggestion, I would not do so until I was ready to be tuned or had EM waiting. These cars do NOT like to be power modded without engine management of some kind. Also, tell your buddy to check his turbo. If the car has an FMIC on the stock snail, it's not helping him much. If the car came with it, there are three possibilities:

1) Former owner was planning on a big(ger) turbo
2) Former owner had a bigger turbo but returned to stock to sell
3) Former owner had no idea what he or she was doing

None of these three situations are all that attractive. However, if the FMIC is a good piece and is plumbed correctly, your friend might be a downpipe and a turbo away from pretty good power. In a perfect world, anyway.

oh boy, this isn't going to go well. I hope he is using some sort of EM.

CobbTuning.com - Dynamic Advance & Dynamic Advance Multiplier Explained

CobbTuning.com - How Subaru’s Factory Boost Control System Works

CobbTuning.com - Aftermarket Intakes

nasioc.com also has a lot of information about how to tune the sti.

your friend has a pretty strange setup. is he on the stock turbo?

as for parts, there are tons of vendors in this forum where you can get anything you want. check the vendors forum.

"the best" is a very subjective question. I'm running an Invidia V2 catless dp as are many other members and I have yet to hear any bad things. There are members running other dps that are also happy. I hear Helix makes a good dp, as does COBB.

The car will most likely throw a cel without the cat (mine did) but you can clear the code with the COBB AP... it can most likely also be cleared through some sort of free engine management software (Like ECUExplorer), but don't quote me on that.

The stock turbo is the VF39. Its smaller than the stock evo snail so you should be able to easily tell if that is indeed the turbo on the car. Also you might want to make sure you have everything you need to flash the STI. It looks like they sell a cable taxtrix cable for both, but it has some other connectors that aren't used on the Evo.

You can use ecuflash or enginuity to flash the car, but you'll have to datalog with enginuity...or romraider. RomRaider - Open Source ECU Tools | RomRaider / Rom Raider

Are you sure the ecu is still running the stock map? The STIs aren't tuned as rich from the factory as the Evos. In fact the 04s were originally lean from the factory at first and had to be reflashed. The 07's have also had issues. The lean tune from the factory is one of the reasons they should be flashed for simple bolts ons.

For tuning, Wideband is the #1 thing to do. Then Downpipe. Don't bother with a boost controller, the ECU handles boost pretty well. Also a bigger fuel pump doesn't really help unless he goes to bigger injectors (which aren't really needed until you go to a bigger turbo or Ethanol.)

On an otherwise stock 06, a turbo-back exhaust + a good tune should be around 290+ awhp depending on dyno. Subies like to have their ECUs tuned, and hate it when they're not. It's not as bad as it sounds as Subies tend to make really good gains for the mods because of the tuning.
