Default $1,000 to spend...

First let me apologize for starting a thread that I'm sure has been covered at some point. I have found a few threads that were "6k to spend, 2k to spend, 300 to spend, etc..." but not a 1k one. I'm a fairly new STi owner who is loving every bit of it. I'm also pretty mod retarded as I've never really owned a vehicle that was worthy of any performance upgrades.

I've got a stock '05 STi that I bought just for summer fun and have about 1k to spend on a few upgrades. I'd like to get a little more rumble out of it and maybe just a tad more power. I'm still under extended warranty for the next 3 years so I'm a little nervous about a tune or anything not reversable but that's mostly out of ignorance than anything.

I was thinking of starting with a Perrin catback (sport) since a local shop has them in stock. That'll run me about 6 bills so I'll have 4 left over.

I'd certainly appreciate any advise and again I apologize to those who find these type of threads annoying. Again - I'm a novice to this stuff and it's easily evident that the people on these forums are very knowledgable.

Thanks!

WOW - those do sound pretty killer. The only reason I mentioned Perrin was that a local shop has them in stock and will give me a decent deal... 6 bills installed. Problem is I can't find any vids detailing the sound. I'll check on the Nur Spec. Thanks for the suggestion!!

For 1000 bucks, the best bang for the buck is a downpipe and an Access Port. A catback is really just about the sound, it will give you 5 or so HP. To really get this engine to make some power you gotta get a down pipe and some form of engine management. A downpipe will also make the exhaust a little louder(even the stock exhaust).

Let me ask this (again sorry for the ignorance)... but if I got a downpipe and catback exhaust could I get away with not doing a tune on it immediately? At this point I totally get the inherint need for the AP but only having so much $$$ to spend will limit what I can buy initially.

Skip the catback for now, that is my opinion. It wont give you anything but some sound and maybe 5-10 HP. You can get a downpipe and use the stock catback. Get a downpipe and an access port and you will pickup in the neighborhood of 50 HP and TQ. When you have more money you can get a catback. Do not get a downpipe until you can get an AP. PM me if you want some pricing on stuff or just some more info.

As other posters said:

Used Downpipe: $300
used accessport: $300
protune: $300

Very easy to revert back to stock if need be. Find a good tuner in your area. Check my sig for my mods and #s on just a stage 2 protune. I have added 60 HP and over 100lbsft Tq.

Most dealerships don't like aftermarket downpipes if you ever have to use that warranty; hopefully you won't. The catback is playing it safe. If you get a downpipe you should definitely get a tune.

I say go with the catback for now to satisfy your rumble craving =) In the future you'll be able to buy a downpipe/tune and the catback has already been taken care of.

For $400, swaybars/endlinks maybe?

I would get a DP and AP as well. I have a HKS CBE right now without a DP, and I feel like my car is a lot slower down low and even sometimes during midrange. Maybe it could be the fact that the temperature here have been 90 degrees this past few days.

I like the idea of a catback exhaust and sway bars. I guess it all really comes down to whether I want sound first and then performance or vice versa. Endless - are you saying that the catback seemed to slow you down a bit on low end?
