I have seen a lot of cars throw misfire codes when they have modified injectors. Do you know what EM the car has, if any? You may want to get tuned. My tuner tells me that if you don't want CEL's, don't modify your car.

Just take your car to a dyno, and get them to check out all the data. There's no point guessing and listening to all these crazy speculations for the sake of 100 bucks...

I really doubt someone would use a modified STI in any sort of rally environment, but maybe you are right...There really isn't any way to make a proper conclusion based on the limited info we have been provided.

If I had bought a car out of state and it was misfiring I think I would check the basics first. 1. engine mechanical (compression test) what does a vacuum guage read? is it steady or fluctuating wildly. leak down test.
2. ignition system coils, plugs,
3. fuel system injectors firing, vacuum leaks, fuel pressure and volume test
then I would start worrying about all the other stuff like tune and aftermarket parts installed. good luck

One of your cylinders is not firing. Check your coil packs, this happened to me before. When this happens it throws off the balance of the car which is very prevalent in the boxer motor (enhanced engine rocking/shaking).

^ How can a single cylinder not fire when the others are firing? At the risk of sounding incredibly newbish, wouldn't having one cylinder not fire completely throw the engine off balance, not just give it a rocking motion?

this may sound way off, but i noticed a similiar sensation on my 07 after i threw in a k&n drop in air filter. car would stumble a bit at idle and make the car shake a bit (rpms would jump from 400 to 800 or so as well). probably not your problem, but i removed the drop in and the problem went away. using only suby paper filters now and the car is fine. might be something to check just for the hell of it.
