Default Full-Race Twinscroll 35R testing -- modified magazine tuner shootout (5/24)

Pete Martini's modified magazine tuner shootout writeup
First, I want to thank Full-Race for inviting me to this event. It has been a long and eventful week for me. I must say that I sure wasn't ready for this!

It all started with the failure of my GT40R. I contacted Geoff at Full-Race about getting my single 60mm wastegate converted into a dual 44mm setup. Everything was going great and on track until I get a call from Geoff inviting me to the super lap battle. This was Sunday night May 18th. Being the optimistic person I am, I accepted. Intake and manifold headers apart, I loaded the car onto a trailer and set off on a 6 hour drive to Arizona at 4:30am.

Arriving at Arizona, I was greeted by the Full-Race staff. There I spent the next three days getting the new up-pipe and reverse mount intercooler installed on my car. Everything was set for a dyno tune of Friday? Friday afternoon rolls around and I drive to UMS for tuning. To my surprise, I see a bunch of other race cars and tuners. What is going on; I think to myself. Before I know it, I am part of Modified's Tuner Shootout! With my car not tuned (previously a 40R with a different intercooler), I was bolted onto the dynapack and off I went. first run (315whp). Oh boy, seconds to make a quick change; done. next run 330whp. I make more changes and the last run yielded 370whp; we're done. done. I stay behind and make some changes after everyone is done and make about 496 with more minor tweaks.

The next day, I go out to get 100 octane fuel from the local gas station; the pump isn't working-91 octane mixed with 100 it is. I return to the track where Mike Speck drives the car on the autocross and absolutely loves it. We realize that we need slicks on the car. Geoff scrambles and gets a set of slicks. We're in business.

We run the quarter mile (I make the first two runs and suck) and Brady makes the last two. We do ok with only 21psi of boost (didn't want to push it ). Mike goes out for the super lap practice session. He does very well but the oil temps are getting high. Geoff and I quickly rearrange the oil cooler as to get more air flow. We make some minor adjustments and were as ready as we are going to get for the super lap session.

Mike goes out and does an amazing job. The car performed great and I couldn't ask for more especially not knowing about the event before hand. Geoff at Full-Race is a master in manifold tuning and that is an understatement. I want to thank him and all the great staff from Full-Race for coming through.

I also wanted to thank Teddy at Mavrik Motorsports in Fullerton for all his support whenever I needed it.

Geoff Raicer's modified magazine tuner shootout writeup

Hey Guys -- Some of you in the subie community have known about Full-Race for a while, some are just learning about us. We've been a pretty hardcore turbokit mfg for about 6 years now and our specialty is manufacturing twinscroll turbokits. We just became a vendor on here, so you will likely see a lot more from us in the near future.

For anyone unfamiliar with us, our twinscroll kits spool faster, have quicker boost/throttle response are more durable and make more power than traditional single scroll turbo setups, and even more than most other competitor's kits. We've been pretty quiet about our subaru development as we've been working hard for the past 3 years to perfect our subaru designs before releasing the complete kits out to the market.

After this past weekend's Modified Magazine tuner shootout, its safe to say that our twinscroll 35R testing is almost complete. We still have a few other minor details to work out, but the cliffnotes are as follows:

-Full-Race entered out twinscroll test subject -- 2007 Subaru STI street car. 100% interior, suede headliner, door panels, a pillars. stereo, AC, PS, radar detector, no rollcage. This car has never been on a track (dyno or road course) before the event. Not once.

-All our competetion brought out full on race cars. gutted, 12pt rollcages, race machines

-our car had a license plate! (registration and insurance were in the glovebox)

-our car was owned, wired and 100% built by pete martini, and he even tuned the motec on UMS's dyno! this guy is unreal. thanks for everything pete, see you this weekend

-Mike Speck (excellent local driver here in AZ) was our pilot. One of the top instructors at bondurant school of high performance driving, and owned a wrx until recently. He has driven some extremely fast STIs, Z06s on slicks, GrandAm cup cars, etc.

-The car made 496whp at 23 psi on 100 octane pump gas

-"That is the fastest auto-x car i have ever driven. and it was on street tires!!" -- brady dohrmann well regarded local auto-xer

-"i think we can really take out some of these race teams with the ac blasting and stereo on!" -- mike speck

-crawford was kind enough to sell us some hankook slicks

-"Read the new issue of modified magazine, on newstands in 4-5 weeks!" --me

some pics and vids of our car at the event

Vids (soundclips, 11.3s drag run at 23 psi on street tires, and track footage) : YouTube - FullRaceVids's Channel (

Pics:

This car had an APS 725 FMIC which is IMO muuch too thick to use for time attack applications. We pulled it off and installed our Full-Race Intercooler kit with Response piping (includes everything required to reverse mount the intake manifold and keep AC, PS, Alt). This allows for much more thru-flow to the radiator and reduced water temps

The owner of the vehicle already installed our twinscroll 40R turbokit very well. We wanted to produce the broadest and meanest powerband possible, and were not too concerned with dyno and 1/4 mile #s so we pulled the 40R off and went with a twinscroll 35R.

all buttoned up ready to go to the dyno

belly shot of full-race twinscroll 35R kit and underbody bracing (remember there is no cage in this car!!)

about to battle crawford's street sti in the drag race!

thanks for the slicks crawford crew!

right before the main event...

end of the night, very tired crew. on the left is the manager of FR's R34, on the right is my crazy hybrid 4runner project lol
check the youtube page for dyno vids, track footage and soundclips!

im happy to answer any questions i can. I apologize if if i am away for the next cpl days, ill be back on sunday or monday morning -- have to go to Cali to pick up some skyline clips. thanks for reading

The vids answered my question. It was really cool seeing the car up close, too bad I missed it in action. The car sounds great in the vid. Keep up the good work!

The grey r34 with the black volks was beautiful....looked similar to a v spec II (I was drooling big time). The green 240 was tearing $%#@ up on the skid pad. I'll have to make the treck from ahwatukee to check out your shop sometime.

when is more information going to be revealed on your rotated intake manifold and FMIC kit?

Also, are their any other products you are developing for the STI?
