Oh, didn't realize that. I thought porsche left the AWD system off their more track-oriented cars for weight savings. Nevermind then.

Equal drivers, the porsche will out brake the STI unless you bring race rubber and he shows up on street tires.

However, if you did dyno that much at the wheels, you should be able to out power him, and you are actually lighter, believe it or not. Use that to your advantage. Strip out whatever you can, get corner weighted, good pads/fluid, race rubber, and work on your corner exits.

Ultimately, he has a better suspension for this kind of work. Assuming he's stock, you can show up with a better tuned suspension, but his car will have less bad habits. Because of your lower weight and higher power, you're going to win in the drag race. Get to the corner first. He'll come right up on your tail because of his better braking, but you can take the inside line and come out ahead of him. Then the moment you can get your power down, lunge out of the turn and streak away from him.

One other thing you should do is find someone familiar with the track you are racing on, preferably someone who competes there regularly in a mixed class. Describe the two cars and ask him where the porsche is lkely to pass you.

A 2001 911 Turbo isn't all that fast because it weighs over 3500 pounds. In magazine comparison tests back then, the 405-hp Z06 Corvette would corner more quickly and turn faster laps (C&D September 2001,for example). So visualize racing a $50,000 Corvette and your fear factor will be lower when you step into the ring.
I hope that you have some practice time in your new setup. Familiarization and shakedown. It will make you faster at Lime Rock. And as others have pointed out, don't go racing on those Neros;they weren't designed for it. Good luck.

Well since they started resurfacing Lime Rock today you got at least a month to continue to work on your car
As far as major items you will have to address others have covered them-brake pads/fluid(and SS lines etc if you wish) and R comp tires most definitely(make sure you've driven on R comps before you race as they have much higher grip but are also much less progressive when they break away-it would be a shame to put your car into the wall and lose the bet), some light 17 inch wheels Enkei RPF-1s?
Other mods-supposedly an X-brace is good for a couple of tenths per lap, I would consider a roll center kit(six gun is more aggressive but more $, whiteline is fine). Group N lateral link and trailing arm bushing replacements would be cheap and worthwhile
Since you seem to have somewhat deeper resources you could also consider fabbing up some brake ducts with the Quantum motorsports kit(although I doubt you would need them unless you are going for more than a couple of laps.
Is this race heads up from a standing start? How many laps? or is it a best lap time attack sort of wager?

The race is from a stop and will be three laps long, I will get to start on the inside corner. I haven't been answering about when because that is being sorted out, three months ago when we set the tentative date, we overlooked the refinishing... so Im not sure exactly when it will go down, but it will definitely happen this summer. Ill give you all as much warning as i can.

Ive been trying to reach my opponent as to details about wheels allowed (but ive been having trouble since he is normally the one to contact me) so until then Im gonna have to wait on the slicks. Do you think it is to my advantage if we both have to use streets?

I think it's reasonable that if you race on street tires he does too... this is supposed to be a contest between your cars, not your tires. That would level the field a bit. Of course he might prefer to be on race tires for just that reason. Ask and see.

If he was planning on race tires and won't race you on street tires, mock him. Let him know that you know that he'll lose unless he has that tire advantage. Call him a chickensxxt puzzy who's afriad of a fair fight.

Well as far as tires if you can use r comp tires and he's using street tires that would be a serious and obvious advantage in corning and braking. If you are both using r comp tires I would think the advantage would go to the better/more experienced driver. But even if you are both on street tires there are still lots better tires than those Pirellis for track use-Bridgestone RE01Rs RE070, Dunlop Direzza Star Specs, Yokohama Advan Neovas, even the Falken RT615s would still be much better and cheaper than all of the above.

I'm going to preface this by saying I own a modded 996 TT and have been beating by an STI in a REAL time trial. It had less power, but much more tuned suspension and a heck of an STI driver. (dunno if Matt Ball posts here or not, but last I heard he was moving up to my class in time trials in his sti).

You have more than enough car to beat the stock 996 TT, and maybe a modded one. But do you have the skill to beat the driver?

HOWEVER there are far too many holes in this story.

- Why is the date of the race not answered? Lime rock is under construction until July and it began on Tuesday.

LIME ROCK PARK

- Why is the club not mentioned or answered? NO ONE will let two random guys go out there and race from a standing start in the middle of their race or DE, NEVER EVER BEEN DONE!!!! Ferrari Club, Aston Club and Porsche Club are the only ones with dates in the near future, and I can promise you that is a no go with all of them. So tell us, who's running the event.

- An instructor???? You have to be kidding me, you're telling me an instructor would race some random guy based on paddock talk. When he doesnt know your skill level. Instructors are scared of guys that will throw a bunch of mods on their car and not know what to do with them. You couldnt pay one to race and put their own life and car in danger vs just some guy.

- Show us some pictures of that smae car vin and all when it had only the couple of mods on it. The already seemingly fabricated story makes me wonder if this is even your car, or didnt have mods to begin with considering your 2k budget.

-oh yeah and, let us see this contract that states you have to buy mods for the TT if you lose and vice versa, I'd really like to see that one.

I was really looking forward to some decent track battle discussion, but the story sounds like too much of a flake.
