Default If you had $6000.00 and a bone stock STI what would you do?

I have a bone stock 2005 STI and am really trying to narrow down what I can do with the above budget. Here are the requirements based on my needs.

1)Upgraded turbo either bolt on or rotated...kinda like the Dom 3
2)Front Mount
3)Injectors
4)Clutch
5)Fuel Pump
6)EM I like the Cobb AP2
7)TBE or Catback depending on whether rotated or not
8)Spark Plugs
9)Maybe headers if the budget allow for it
10)Externally gated if the budget allows for it

My goals are to have a daily driver that can do well in the quarter mile and retain stock like drivability.

If you buy stuff used you might be able to swing a rotated 35r hehe. I did my build on the cheap, but Perrin jacked up their prices soon afterwards.

Don't forget about motor/tranny/rear diff mounts/bushings, gauges, and tuning. Also, the clutch install is not cheap, and you might be able to put it off for quite a while.

Let me give you some really good advice from someone who just modded his bone stock STI. I set out to spend 2,500-3,000 on my build. I bought a lot of parts from people on NASIOC and saved a ton of money. Things like exhaust, intakes, injectors, even turbo kits can be found in perfect shape and usually up to half off retail. Take a look on Ebay too. Don't sink a ton of money into the exhaust either. You can buy a nice complete TBE on NASIOC for 250-500 and save big money there too.

Now here is the part you are going to want to pay close attention to. Make sure you set your build cost about 1,000 dollars cheaper then what you have to spend! I promise you there will be things that are going to come up that you are not expecting. I ended up with over 4,500 in mine because I did not plan on my clutch going out, my coil packs breaking down, the cost of my tunes, etc. There are still things like bushings and what not that I want to finish up. If you have 6,000 to spend, I would plan my build around 4,500 to 5,000. The first thing I would do is a compression test! If you have a weak motor, your 6,000 is damn near already spent!

You can build a strong 11 sec ride that easily puts down over 400whp and tq for around 4k. Just be smart about it! Hope this helps, good luck.

Another thought would be to sell the stock STI, and take the money plus that $6k and buy one of the 500whp+ built motor stis that are for sale.

Part of the reason you're getting lukewarm response is that there are as many turbo setups as there are people willing to make them work.

I would just spring for the Full Race 30R kit and call it done.

You guyz are crazy! That would just leave him with a wrecked STI with about $6000 in damage. Then he would be back to square one minus $6000, but no car payment.........hhhmmmmmmm (runs outside, jumps in the STI, & runs into a wall).

just save it until you know what YOU want to do with the car.Thats the best advice I can give you...stage2 is fun get intake tbe fuelpump accessport and solenoid. Then get protuned and be happy...for a while. That will cost about $2500 and you will have $3500 to spend on the new gas prices.

I say go stage 2 and you will get enough power to hold you off until you plan out the other upgrades

Like others have said...I agree going with the "stage 2" approach. Get a Turbo Back Exhaust and engine management...flash stage 2 and enjoy it for a bit...it would be money spent well as you will still be able to use it with your upgraded turbo set-up.

Going balls out could mean some pretty rough problems down the road and if you had already spent the budget...your car might be down for awhile...

Along with the set-up you would like, you'd have to factor in all the bushings that need replacing *the stock ones are pretty flimsy* as well as a new clutch, tune, + some other little things here and there...who knows what kind of problems you'll run into, if any.

Go stage 2, enjoy it and do plenty O research on this forum....and save save save! Then when time comes...go for it!

Hope this helps!

Kind Regards,
Ryan
