A lot of variables here, but in short 400whp is the max.

That number seems a little low. So EVO's have the STi beat eh?

well probably no surprise really as that's "reliability-wise"...(reliability=DD, so when would you need more than 400 whp for dd??)..nonetheless, evo's have no reliability period to begin with...what's the max to push the sti block is another story

And what makes EVO's so "unreliable"?

Any unbiased review = EVO is quicker around a track and more reliable, hence my question.

This is funny. Mitsu's are known for some reliablility issues...I'm not certain about the Evos in particular...but how can you define that any review that says the Evo is quicker and more reliable is unbiased. This is just ridiculous.... Can you cite -one- of your unbiased sources and prove that it is unbiased.

I use to have a 3000 GT VR4 and had to take it into the dealership a couple times for some issues (reliability sucked - tranny) mainly engine codes. Anyway eveytime I went in they had an EVO (different one every time) in that they had to fix. The dealer machanics told me that EVO's drive trains are pretty weak and have had a bunch of issues (I hope they were being unbiase). This is what I've heard all over the place, this is the main reason I went with the STI. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, unless you like driving your car.

...so the quicker on track, the more reliable now?!? of course reviews say the evo is quicker as we all know that so forget about the whole biased thing, but they don't mean its more reliable. they're testing the car's (and any car) ability/specs to perform at the moment...reliability not only comes from withstanding that test, but it comes more from a standard of time...how many more subies do you see out there on the road today compared to the mitsus?...thats what i thought...cause people actually know or experienced and i know the unreliability of the mitsu...and by reviews, i meant the ones that actually take reliability as a factor (testing it through time and or gathering information/reviews of a broad list of consumers who have the vehicle) cause obviously not everyone is using their cars to go on the track buddy...consumer reports put the subaru impreza wrx sti on their top list and it made perfect sense as it went along with other very reliable cars as well..not to mention the sti was on many other of their top lists from maintenance to including #2 or perhaps give or take 1 for "driver satisfaction"...nonetheless, evo as a track car, fine, its quicker yeah, but not by much at all and the sti overcomes in absolutely everything else..you dont have to look the best on a track to actually be the best and the sti is proof of that

u also have to take in consideration that evo's are beat on consistently. sti's arent beat on that much. evo's will also give u much more power but sti's look better. the best way i think of u finding out if evo's are reliable is for u to go on evo forums and look and ask around.

to answer the original question. I have heard many things from 450whp to 550 whp. I read a post on nasioc that gadiel made saying that he though a stock motor sti at 550 would last a long time. I would think somewhere around 475whp on a stock motor would be a safe limit. Like a 35r on pump gas would be a safe limit for an sti, imho.
