Default Want to purchase 07 STi but...

Hello all, I have been lurking the forums for quite some time now and still cant decide if purchasing the 07 STi is a good idea. The reason I say this is because of the troubles of the ECU (hesitation problem/bucking)--but more importantly I am concerned about blowing the motor. What conditions need to be present in order for this to happen? Is it necessary to purchase a new fuel pump and or injectors so the car does not run as lean as the stock tune? Sorry if some of this may seem ignorant-still a noob . Thanks

Hi,

Basically, running w/out some short of EM (ie, Cobb AP) and throwing on a TBE, etc, will most likely lead to problems. From your research here, you should have noticed that most 07 owners engines are doing fine with a flash to stage 1, or stage 2 with a TBE. It seems that the guys who can run 93 oct from the pump have a better running 07. I have not run into any issues with mine. If you can get a killer deal, than by all means go for it.

^ running bone stock with no tune could lead you into trouble.

if you want an 07, buy it and immediately take it to a recommended tuner in your area. that will solve any issues.

So even the accessport does not make this safe from blowing the motor? Because I know after the purchase on this vehicle I will not want to pay for a protune(not yet) especially if I havent done much modding to the vehicle yet.

Getting an AP and flashing a stage1 should cure the problematic tunes on the 07. you then can be able to rest knowing its not on the oem bad tune then mod as you please from there on out.

What he said. Pick up a Cobb AP, flash to stage 1 and you are good to go. Then if you mod anymore down the road, you already have your AP.

Do not let the fact that it is an 07 stop you from buying an STI. The 07's have better gearing and a bigger turbo than the 04-06 STI and have been know make more power with stage 2 mods than the earlier years. Like everyone else said, buy the 07 and an accessport and you will be fine. Even if you don't want to go stage 2 the stage 1 map will make quite a bit of difference and you will likely get better fuel mileage out of the car.

The 07s are awesome. It's not the car, its not the engine, its not anything but the tune that comes on the ECU from the factory. If buying an 07, factor in the cost of AP v2 when making the decision. The second you get the car home, flash stage1 and you will have nothing to worry about. The Off-the-shelf (OTS) maps from cobb are infinitley safer than the stock tune. They actually run a bit rich which is always safer than running lean.

Later on down the road, pro-tune.

Thank you for all the help, this is making the decision a lot more comforting knowing I wont be spending 35k on a vehicle that has some serious issues on it. But another question is that even with the Cobb AP- (I would go stage 2 right away because the car I am thinking of purchasing has the SPT intake and exhaust) do I still run the risk of blowing my motor (piston)?

Thanks

Get rid of the intake, and keep the exhaust. The SPT Exhaust really does nothing performance wise, it just sounds really good (not too loud but you you can still hear the rumble). In order to go to stage 2 you would need to replace the stock downpipe (the SPT exhaust is a cat-back NOT a turbo -back).

Personally, I have a bone stock '07 (except for the SPT exhaust) and have had no problems. An AP is a good idea as it will change the fuel map to run richer making it less likely to cause problems. A very basic explanation of what it will do for you and I will leave it at that. All the naysayers that bad mouth the '07 stock tune....................not all '07's have problems. If you are going to mod your car though, do the AP and protune when you are able to.

Does the intake hurt performance compared to the stock airbox (better I've learned)?
