Default My used APS 65mm CAI and my rejuvenation write up

I just went through this last night. Save yourself the trouble. The OD of the K&N filter is TOO big.
After many months contemplating setups and deciding what route I want to go w/ my intake, I came across a used APS 65mm CAI. I got it used from a vendor. I got everything and it definitely shows it was used. Here are some pics showing the initial condition of the CAI:

I first wanted to make sure I had all the parts so I was informed of this link: APS 65mm CAI Info Page

I decided that the filter was a little too used for me so I measured the K&N filter that came w/ the APS CAI and then went to the K&N website to find a replacement filter. It was found in the universal cone filter section.

Here is the link to the replacement filter: LINKY

And some pics of the new RU-3130 K&N filter box (b/c who doesn’t like pics!):

Here is a pic of the new filter next to the old used filter (exact match!!! ):

While I was on the K&N site page for the RU-3130, I noticed that at the bottom there were other links to filters. Turns out there are different pre-filters (aka prechargers) you can get to go over the K&N filter to increase time between cleanings. I ended up getting a black and a blue pre-filter (mesh type vs. the foam). FYI, the pre-filters only restrict air flow by 2%.

Here is a link to the black pre-filter:

Here is a link of the blue pre-filter:

The blue was back ordered so I only have pics of the black prefilter installed:

Yeah, it's damn near impossible to not booger those things up when installing/uninstalling them. I've never heard of those pre-filters, that's kind of interesting.

Yes, there are two varieties of pre-filters: Mesh (like I have above) and Foam. The mesh has an elastic band at the bottom to hold it on whereas the foam only wraps around and attaches using velcro.

So far I like it (build quality and design is good) but it hasn't been installed yet. These pics were taken last night before I hit the hay. I have to repaint the intake blue (to match my ride) first before I install it. Hopefully, I can get that done before the new year.

FYI... Amazon.com has the filter for $26 and the pre-filter for $16 with free shipping over $25 spent.

Thanks for pointing this out. I just purchased a second one. I like the idea of having a spare on-hand to swap out without worrying about cleaning and drying it on the same day. Can't beat free shipping!

Does anyone know if the filters above are the same for the 65mm and the 70mm APS intakes?

The pre-filters are generally used for desert/off road guys to keep the big chunks of mud/dirt out of the real filter so you can easily pull it off and clean it, rather than doing the whole washing/drying/oiling of the normal filter. Since the APS puts the filter in the fender, its not so easy just to pull off, refresh and put back on. I dont think it will give longer service intervals for non "dirt" environments...maybe..let us know.
