Default How to data log, Enginuity or ecuExplorer?

been searching for a few days now so...

I am completely new to this so be nice. I want to do some data logging on my MY07 STI, which is stage 2 protuned. I have no idea where to start.

I am looking to data log only, I'll let the pros do the tuning for me.

I bought a tatrix cable already, and have a laptop ready to go. What software should I use, Enginuity or ecuExplorer? I really need like a how to guide on doing this. And yes I have read every single FAQ on Enginuity's website, I find that site very confusing and not very noob friendly at all.

Please help a noob.

Ive never used ecuExplorer, but I hear it's a good program. I use Enginuity exclusively.

Best thing you can do as a noob is log log log and read the forums. Logging is completely safe, and youll get to know exactly how your car works.

As for it being complex, I dont find it hard. Just play with it and youll figure it out.

The only reason to use ECU Explorer IMO is to reset the ECU or look up diagnostic codes. ECU Flash is going to have all the drivers for you open port cable and will let you change your map. Enginuity will let you change your map, and log engine parameters (including LC1 wideband now).

To log with Enginuity just open Enginuity and go to logger. Its in the top buttons (file, ect). Then you have to select which COM port your open cable is on. Then click the green button next to it. I use the dashboard gauge setup then click which parameters you want to log (in the top left square). The bottom left square is just for differents thing you can start the log with. Enginuity by default starts logging when you hit your defogger and turns off when you hit it again. It also has a time limiter (about 20 mins I think) that will automatically turn off if you dont.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll just have to mess around with it. As far as choosing parameters, what are some good parameters to start with? Honestly, I have no idea what to even look for, if something were off I wouldn't even know it. What exactly am I looking for, knocking, boost levels, A/F ratios, etc. What are the most important things to look for and where can I find a guide to what the proper tolerance levels are for each parameter.

I'm trying to learn here...need help.

Well you have to save your stock map using ECU Flash then you can look at what your tables call for and what your getting using Enginuity. Look on Enginuity.org for more information about what you need to log. For instance when your tuning your MAF scaling table your going to log different parameters than you are while your tuning boost.

I'm running a protuned map, so do I still save the stock map or the protuned map with EcuFlash?

You don't need to save your map if you just want to log. I use ecuExplorer because it seems to be simpler to use (for me anyway) than Enginuity. Plus I was getting errors with Enginuity on my car PC. You want to log things like RPM, speed, throttle opening (so you know when you're WOT), manifold relative pressure (that's your boost), knock correction, IAM and load if you can find the right addresses for them, A/F, MAF. You don't want to log too many parameters as it will slow down the number of readings per sec.

Do both ecuExplorer and Enginuity play well with MY 07 STi's? I have read a lot of conflicting info about certain parameters not recognized. Most of the info was old, probably prior to the last Enginuity release, but ecuExplorer isn't being updated anymore, correct?

ecuExplorer is really easy to use, I've never tried enginuity though. With ecuexplorer you just plug your AP cable into your laptop, select the parameters you want, hit the defrost button and it starts logging into a comma separated file. Easy as pie.

I can't use my AP cable since I have a V2. Already ordered a tactrix anyway.

I guess I'm confused about whether or not I need to "save my ROM" or not if all I want to do is log and what do i compare my logs to in order to make sure everything is within tolerance? Man the Enginuity forum is awful, it's like nobody is home.

Well you need to look at what your map is calling for vs what you are getting. IE knock correction at x load and x rpm should be say 5. Then you go and do a log and if it isnt 5 at that load and rpm then you know its pulling timing. You have to have a wideband to check WOT air fuel ratios. The stock sensor is only accurate around 14.7 a/f area.

Heres a few things you should definantly check out..

(download the calibration and tuning worksheet, read it a bunch of times to soak everything up)

Right there in those links is plenty for you to learn/read. You may need to read through it multiple times. You will get the hang of it all.

You don't NEED to save the ROM in order to log, but it's good to know what boost / timing / AFR / etc the ROM is calling for, to help you interpret the logs. The ROM that the car is running is the only one that's interesting if all you want to do is make sure the car is healthy.

I use Enginuity to view my ROM and ecuExplorer for logging, but only because my laptop doesn't get along with Enginuity's logger.
