The conclusion reached seems reasonable...

That sorta implies that you had an Ecutek tune. Likely you had a tune by someone else, and Ecutek was merely the method used to program the ECU.

For the record, the turbo inlet hose was incorrectly fitted by Subaru at the factory and it broke under the clamp letting unmetered air through., leaning out the combustion and causing detonation. That and the Ecutek tuning, which overrode factory ECU safety margins blew up my engine.
I'm just wondering why you were disappointed that Ecutek didn't refund your tuning and dyno costs...none of this was their fault. I wouldn't even expect them to refund your money for your license. They went over and beyond IMO.

as he said, if someone sold me a shoe I couldn't take off and didn't tell me that I could never take it off, I'd be pretty pissed and Id want my money back.

They have a money back warranty if you are not 100% happy with their product.
Given the fact that my car blew up shortly after their tune up, I was only 95% happy with ECUTEK
Are you absolutely sure that it wasn't the tuner's fault, without seeing and hearing all the evidence of three independent experts? Such long distance diagnosis based on my one paragraph description of the event is plain ridiculous, don't you think?
Anyway, I was not blaming anyone but mererly pointing out the circumstances under which I discovered that once the ECU had been reprogrammed by ECUTEK, there was no way to reflash it back to original, except to buy a new unit.

You don't seem to think it had anything to do with the tune.

Everybody think about this situation for a minute. What if.....
You took your car into the dealership for some type of warranty work, etc. While working on your car the tech decides to reflash your ECU with some kind of Subaru update. If this security program wasn't in place, bye bye custom tune. How pissed would you be then??? I'm not in any way siding with Ecutek here, but I think this may have been their intentions.
Just wanted to give a different perspective here.
All in all, you should definitely be warned that this security stuff is being flashed onto your ECU.

This issue of locking applies to *all* EcuTEK licenses, not just 06 cars.

I have ECUTek on my 05. No problem what so ever. I like having the safety feature, but they should atleast provide the USERS with the ablilty to unlock it if they want. I like the fact that others cant delete my tune, but if i want to it should let me.

if the dealer reflashed my ecu without telling me they would have some serious explain / ass kissing to do.

i have ecutek.. it's my second subie with ecutek, and at this point i would have to lament that ecutek as a company is total crap IMO, in dealing with the pirating license issues, multi maps, amt of US dealers, etc.. otherwise it's safe and works quite well.
