Default AVC-R or DTEC?

I am having trouble deciding between the two. I pretty much have only bolt ons with a FMIC, CAI, inlet, fuel Pump, TBE and ecutek. The AVC-R is pretty cheap used and the DTEC is about $100-$125 more used. Which would you all go with? The tuner reccomended the AVC-R, but again which is going to be better?

Both are good, go with what your tuner prefers.

I have had both and I like the Dtec better. Offers better gear specific boost control. Plus it is much more stealth since it is controlled with a Gameboy that disconnects when you aren't datalogging or making adjustments.

so you can disconnect it after you've decided what boost to run? Like I can set for example 18psi then disconnect the gameboy, even while the car is running?

Yea I ordered the DTEC today with a gameboy used from a guy on NASIOC for 386 shipped

Yep sure can. Once the boost settings are in, you don't even have to use the Gameboy anymore if you don"t want to. The only time I turn mine on is for a tuning session or to datalog.

Here's my take.

I had a AVC-R that died, so I figured I'd give the DTEC a shot. There are somethings better about the DTEC, but there are also things better about the AVC-R. It's uf for you to decide.

Stealth: DTEC wins. The Game Boy is just the disply. The actual unit is hidden away where ever you want to install it. The AVC-R is big and doesn't stow as easily. You could always leave it in plain sight, but I am no fan of that. I bought a Forester pocket and tucked it in there when I parked.

Easy of Tune: DTEC wins, but only because it is more intuitive. Once you figure out how to use a AVC-R, it's a nice unit.

Value: This is a tuff one. My DTEC reads higher boost than what is really there, but the AVC-R stop working. AVC-Rs have been known to do that. The AVC-R also gets hot. I guess that mean DTEC wins again.

DTEC...don't get all smily just yet

MAP selection AVC-R wins. There's and A and a B. They are bothe completely seperate fully tuneable maps. You can change maps in about 2 secs. There is a series of steps to get the DTEC in 'scramble' mode, but to my knowledge, that is not really a fully tuneable second map as much as it is an override. Don't take my word on that. Find out the facts. The AVC-R's scramble is for a temporary use and you can even buy a seperate easy access button just to activated for this feature.

Display of data: AVC-R wins. You can display multiple channels at once. In all fairness, you can do this with a DTEC aswell, but the font is super tiny. Even if you mounted the GameBoy on the dash right in front of you, you couldn't read it without giving it way too much attention.

Peak Hold: AVC-R wins. This feature does not even exist on the DTEC, and that drives me nuts.

Useable data: Hard to say. The logging is by far superior on the DTEC. The only sucky part is that it displays too slowly. You can't speed it up. It plays at 1X. I do believe you can download the log to a laptop though. AVC-R plots a graph, which is a cool idea, but the graphs suck. DTEC can display AFR. The AVC-R can display speed. "Speed," who cares, right? Well I do, but only because of the peak hold. I believe the AVC-R doens't display in psi. It's been a while since I've had the AVC-R.

Gear/RPM Select boost: Both have this feature and both work well. I believe you have more rpm points of adjustment (6) in the DTEC and you can change the points form say 2000rpm to 2200rpm. The one thing that I don'et understand about TurboXS, is they knew that they would be competing with APexi's old AVC-R, yet they made it with only 5 gear selection in a time when so many cars have 6 gears.

Analog Gauge Display: Again, tough call. The DTEC has much better looking gauges, but teh AVC-R can display more than one at the same time.

So which would I rather have? If the AVC-R didn't have a rep for malfunction. I'd rather have the AVC-R. The peak hold and the simple map switching are very important to me....but I have the DTEC.

For those who actually have tried these boost controllers, when in first gear does the controller actually start applying duty cycle? I have used both in the past two weeks and neither has applied any duty cycle before 5000 rpms no matter what I did. Any input, advice or experience is appreciated.

It applies exactly the D/C settings as programmed in the main D/C map. In first gear, however, there is very little load so unless you modify the D/C map by inputting a fairly large S/D setting, you'll never hit target boost. And, no matter what you tell the WG to do, it will spool a lot more slowly in the lower gears.

Simply increase the S/D (Start Duty) setting for 1st gear (slowly, using small incremental increases) until you get target boost. It may not happen until you're above 6K rpm, but you can get there provided your system is up to par and you're not using some incredibly humongous turbo.

How do you set the dtec to keep the wastegate shut until target boost?

Neither. Stock boost control with a Prodrive Solenoid=alot less trouble and $$$$.
