Default How safe are Accessport version 1

I am thinking about purchasing a used Accessport version 1. I have heard that they can brick your ecu if not install correctly. Has this happened to anyone? Also is there any way to know by reading the serial number or any other way to identify what year the accessport is for?

Didn't they used to (or still do?) call the WRX tranny a "glass transmission" for that reason?

APv1s are perfectly safe. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them, save that they are not as "cool" as v2s and have map size limitations.

The map size limitation is not a huge problem, as your tuner should be ale to create a safe tune within the limits.

People who damage their ECU on a v1 are simply not following the simple instructions. I used one for years and never had a single problem.

Make sure you don't use the wrong power adapter. That would be an expensive repair for s product that is discontinued.

Yeah I am just looking to buy a used accessport. I do not need launch control or anything. I just been reading the instructions for the version 1 and I see that you have to make sure that the plug stays in while you are reflashing the ecu and the battery has a good charge. Or you will mess up your ecu. How long does it actually take to reflash the ecu for the first time I heard between 30 and 45 minutes is this true.

People were losing their ECU's because their battery would die mid flash. Once this happens you have to send in your ECU for a new stock map and try again. Make sure you have a good battery and a good charge before flashing.

I've use a V1 and yeah it takes a good 25min to flash. I haven't bricked it and my cord is bad so I must wrap it around the AP to keep pressure on it so that it keeps going.. (Cobb said there are problems with the AP V1 cords and that because of that they would replace it if i sent it in (free))

The original AP's were discontinued before the 07 flash info was completed.

Short answer no, the New AccessPORT is the only one with 07 programming.
