From my recent protune experience; I just showed up with everything properly installed and running well. My tuner had to update my AP to latest firmware, which I thought was weird because I updated it just a few days before. But after that he just went to town.

The AP doesnt actually tune your car. Your car will be tuned with a laptop most likely and the Protuner software. The tuner will make the necessary adjustments and when he is done will load that map to the AP and reflash your car.

My car was reflashed about 3 times during the whole process.

It is all up to your tuner. Mine required a certain type of plugs and a Walbro 255 before he would tune it.

Check my journal for all the mods by clicking my sig picture. Below is a review of my tuning experience. I also picked up 1-2mpg
