Default Turbo timer?

A guy at the gym has a Greddy turbo timer on his Neon SRT! When he pulls in the car runs for a couple of minutes and shuts down. I know the theory of why you would do this, but what is the general consensus on here about doing this for the STI?

Do you guys let your STI's cool down a few minutes before shutting off? Or is the technology that good now where you don't have to worry about this?

our turbos are water and oil cooled. no need for it.

Its not so much that the turbos are both water and oil cooled, its that the coolant system is designed in such as way, it continues to cool the turbo after the engine has been shut off. As the coolant passes through the CHRA, it heats up, travels upward in the system, and draws colder coolant in behind it, creating its own circulation.

The water coolant system is not designed this way in my much older twin turbo Z. For this reason, some owners of that car choose to run turbo timers. That brings up another catch22, IMO. With the car sitting idle, there's no air moving past the radiator or the oil cooler, and underhood temps will rise anyway.

In both cars (I drive a LegacyGT, close enough plumbing wise to an 08STi) I keep out of boost for the last mile and just take it easy before shutting the car off. I am my own Greddy turbo timer.

however~ a turbo timer is a $100 investment that will maintain your turbo in good working order should you decide that you have the extra coin for it. it wont hurt the car if you have it as an extra feature. http://www.iwsti.com/forums/2008-sti...d-engines.html

btw, i have one and haven't installed it yet... been just waiting in the car after drives and put stuff away then i turn the car off. should be sufficient for normal drives.

As long as you take it easy the last 2 minutes before shutting the car off, a turbo timer will not make a difference. I'd rather spend the $100 elsewhere first.
