Default No intakes on untuned 07 this is why

I had my protune today with Chris at XXtuning, btw if you are in the area look no further. Hit him up for a tune, no questions asked! He explained what was going on every step of the way. I felt very comfortable and he def knows his stuff!

Anyway the reason for this thread is, awhile back I tried to put my APS 65mm CAI on my 07 STi and do some logging to determine if I was running safely. According to my logs at the time I didn't think it was a very big difference. I took it off anyway but I got to find out today...

DO NOT RUN ANY INTAKE ON AN UNTUNED 07

See the pic below, the lower line is obviously the AFR. I was basically running 13:1 at one point. That was Cobb stage 2 V1.04. WAYYYYY too lean. You have been warned!

What would you say about the K&N Drop in filter? COBB said it was okay to run with, would you say different?

Yeah I ran the drop in filter the entire time. Didn't really add any noise or such but I was on that drop in filter since I got my car.

I did the intake experiment back in october. Basically I did some pulls with my stock box and drop in filter. Then installed the APS 65mm CAI and did some more, TRYING to determine if it was safe to run.

the answer is def NO with an 07.

Here's that old thread

You guys are missing the point, my APS SEEMED fine and it was supposed to run ok since it was the 65mm version. That's a dyno chart from today showing how much it actually leaned me out. The APS however has atleast steady intake temps, you guys are getting roller coaster temps thrown into your intake

i ran my intake on both a 06 and a 07. i choose this intake, because:

it DOES add more power

some noise

and last....subaru covers damages that may be caused by it...

i also made sure to have subaru install my intake.

just a lil 100 security...

andddddd

cold air intakes may be more steady with air temperature because of the filter in the wheel well and not the engine bay, but are known to be probematic on no tune while short ram intakes have proven to be suitable.

I can't say 100% that it is exactly like your stock filter but I would imagine the effects would be negligible. Very very minimal.

The testing I did with my narrowband with the stock box vs the APS on my own was useless looking back on it. I didn't really see much difference between the logs. The narrowband didn't tell much of the story.

The only thing I know for sure is Chris ran up to me and said look what your cold air did with the base pull, and that 13 was way too lean.

I have to disagree with this. I hear more about A/F problems with SRIs due to turbulent air flow. The same problems arent usually as pronounced with CAIs due to the longer piping, which has more of a stabilizing effect.

Cobb put a little grill in their SRI in an attempt to straighten the air out.

IMHO, SRIs suck (no pun) unless you have the need for a sh*t load of air to enter your turbo (read, much larger turbo).

My own testing has confirmed (at least for me) that every 10 degrees F is more than a tenth a second in the quarter mile. The difference in 1/4 time can be upwards of a half second between 50 and 100 degrees. Not to mention SRIs suck to have in the summer when in stop and go traffic.

do you even know what your A/F looked like without the intake on though? If not, then how can you blame your aftermarket intake?
