Default Getting proffessionally tuned by Jorge at P&L Motorsports

So yesterday I called Ty to set up an appointment to drive down to Chicago during the last weekend in May to get tuned by Jorge.

Currently I am running the Cobb OTS Stage two map with Grimmspeed uppipe, Cobb TBE. I have an APS 65mm CAI sitting in my basement that I am not going to install until the week before the trip. I don't know how much damage running a CAI will do without a tune but hopefully it will be minimal with <week daily driving and the 390 mile trip Also, I opted to have a GMBCS installed prior to the tune.

Anyway, just thought I'd post here before and after with the results of the tune. I am really looking forward to building/holding boost, and seeing what the car can do with a healthy lean/rich balance.

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears.

I just had my car at the Subaru dealership for service, will be bringing five gallons of the MN 92 gas, and will be changing the oil right before I leave as well as bringing couple extra quarts of oil.

call jorge and see if he even wants you to install the gmbcs. He tuned my stage 2 (typhoon, perrin catted dp, helix 3" catback, walbro 255, dw 740's) and got the numbers in my sig. Which is awesome for a car with 60XXX miles on it at tune too So I would listen to whatever he says.

As for the drive, just take it easy and you will be fine.

Also, double check for leaks from the intake to the manifold. If you car has more than 30K miles on it, get some MAF cleaner and clean that as well before going.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I will do that.

Ty suggested the GMBCS and quoted me for the cost of the unit installed so P&L will be doing the install when I arrive. I don't have the unit.

Since you're from St. Paul, I'm curious if you've also looked into DB Performance since they're a Cobb-authorized tuner with an AWD dynomometer, just a little NW of where you live? I don't know too much about them yet myself, like how much experience they have with the STi's. It's probably a safe bet that Jorge at P&L has more experience. But I'm starting to look into getting a professional tune too and I saw that DB Performance is the closest option I could find. Just wondering if you've heard anything about DB Perf to persuade/dissuade me.

Ya, I have. I have heard mixed reviews. If you want, do a search on the mnsubaru site for "db protune" and you can read them as well. I've spoke with one member who got a protune there and she was very happy with the results on her 05.

I am going with Jorge for two reasons really. First and foremost, his credibility and reputation. From what I've read, he is notorious for providing safe yet powerful tunes, and that is precisely what I want.

Second, I want to put the $700 accessport to good use and he tunes using that. I know that some people have been really happy with their open source tunes but I don't want to sell this thing and go that route, too much work.

Yea I did, I don't want to wait that long, and last time he was here, there was a big list. I think he only had enough time to tune five vehicles IIRC? Besides, I have never been to Chi-town so it should be a fun little road trip. Thanks for checking though

Can't go wrong with Jorge! Good choice on the GM boost control thingy. I went with that and just had them install it when I was there too. Have a good drive down. Good reason for a road trip!!

The more the merrier. Last time I called, they had slots on Friday for noon and 3:00 p.m. and the 3:00 p.m. was open. Give Ty a call, he is friendly, helpful, and probably won't mind.

I feel like I will take a trip down there this summer to get a nice tune that or I will wait until my girlfriend goes to school there in late August and just get it done then. Can I ask how much the tune alone is going to cost you?

It really depends on how many mods you have. It looks like, similarly to myself, you have some light mods on your 06. Ty estimated an hour or two for the tune on my car, with my mods. Of course, something could always take extra time so you never know.

Their tuning rates are listed on on their webpage.

Welp, 1200 miles later, back in MN with a fully tuned machine.

The trip itself was long. Chicago has a lot of tolls.

Ok, now on to the tune. Everything went fine in the beggininig, the GMBCS install was quick, and my car was on the rollers about an hour after arrival. All was well until the tune was about %95 complete when the clutch started to slip. Not sure what the OEM clutch is rated for but here are the results:

I didn't get to really test things out until I got back to MN safely and took care of the clutch situation.

I decided to throw some money at the problem and go with an Exedy Twin Disc Racing clutch. Yikes that thing is loud, but damn is it nice.

And now, sans drive train issues, the car feels amazing. I know everyone says that about protunes so it really doesn't mean much but, my lower gears are much more drivable and have much quicker spool-up. As Jorge put it, "a little throttle now goes a long way". I am very pleased with the results and the P&L crew in general. It was a really good experience and they were very helpful and willing to answer all my questions.

Lastly, if anyone ever gets tuned at P&L, be sure to stop by Portillo's. There is one not too far away from P&L and both the members of IWSTI and the P&L crew recommended their hot sammiches, damn they are delicious. If only MN had something half that good...
