Default Is it absolute that I need an engine management?

Is it absolute that I need an engine management before I mod my Subaru, (08 STi). I was thinking of getting a downpipe but just wanted to know if I wont be able to without the engine management.

haha. only if you like your car. If you are sweating the price then don't mod your car man. It is only going to cost you more if you go cheap. That's the #1 rule of moding.

Not sweating the price just wondering, knowledge is power. Because I have seen some suby I know modded without engine management is all. I am slowly growing in understanding how to mod Subys and after all this is what this site is for no?

cool. There are very little engine related modifications that you can get away without EM on the sti platform. You have the 08 so there is relatively few things out there yet for it and even less experience on what's works and doesn't. So I'd be extra-carefull and do a lot of research before taking chances.

an access port or ecutec should be the first thing on your list. normally people start with a full turbo back + EM.

enjoy your new ride.

Can you do it, yes. Is it safe, no. Another factor is like this, you put a downpipe in, it gives you 10 HP by itself. You get EM and tune for it, +50 HP.

Thanks guys I was also interested in asking what is the difference between the EM like accessport and utec with just reflashing the ECU. Is reflashing safe?

Go with the COBB V2, it is much more user friendly and can easily be tuned by any tuner with the street tuner software. Then pop yourself a turbo back exhaust on that puppy and have her tuned.

If you would like to learn tuning, you could go opensource, and slowly build up your knowledge. If you dont want to or dont have the time, the Cobb AP is the way to go. In fact, get it first. Stage 1 Cobb can be flashed with no hardware mods at all, and if 08s are anything like 07s, itll make a huge difference in feel. Then when you get a DP, just flash Cobb Stage 2 and that's all youll need.
