WOW! If this works we can finally close this thread!!! A lot of people will be really happy to read your post. Thanks in advance. But a few questions, are there directions for turning HSA back on? Does it just turn off for that restart or until you reverse it?

Until you reverse the procedure.
It can also be adjusted by the dealer for sensitivity.

I just tried it and it doesn't appear to work on the '08. Something weird does happen though:

- I started the engine
- Pressed and held the VDC button; it went yellow, then 2 seconds later green. I continued to hold it and the VDC light turned off.
- I released the button within 5 seconds.
- Pressed the VDC button again and the hill-assist light did not turn on. The weird part is that the VDC button appeared to stop working. I could no longer turn the VDC on and off (I confirmed this the second time I tried it, not the first).
- Turned off the engine.
- Restarted and tried to roll out of my garage, which has a very slight incline. Hill-assist activated.

I will double check the method.
Try having the engine running, apply parking brake and turn off, than restart.
You must confirm once you restart that the VDC off light does NOT illuminate, the abs light does NOT illuminate and that the brake system warning light DOES illuminate.
Do not release the VDC button until the VDC icon disappears. Again, you have 5 seconds to release the switch.
Within the two seconds of releasing just hit the VDC switch once.
Turn off engine, restart engine.

****ty guys
Must be an 09 feature only.
I'm still sure that the dealer can remove the feature or make it less aggressive.
I'm going to see my friend tonight to work on our RallyX car, I'll try to get more info.

Hill assist truly does suck ass.

I'm going to contact Subaru Canada and see if this feature exists already on the '08 but is "undocumented" or perhap it requires the dealership to do it. I have a feeling it might even be a firmware upgrade on the VDC control module, but who knows if they would do this or not.

I just tried and got nothing as well... this would explain why I stalled in the driveway today... 1 foot devent incline (scrapes if not done right)

Also I was under the impression if u hill assist engages taping the break disengages it. Also let go of the break before you start your routine it works fine, no assist.

I live in texas our non busy hills are limited... Ill see what I can find out..
