It really depends what EM you are running. Every type requires a set amount of time to tune on the dyno, hence the different rates. Simple EM's like an AFC runs around $150-200 to dyno tune. EM's like the Cobb AP/ Ecutek range from $350-450. More advanced systems like the Hydra/ Haltech/ Motek will range $450-700.

Another thing is that some tuners take longer than others to tune your vehicle. So the more time they take, the more they will charge for dyno time. My suggestion is going to a qualified/ experienced tuner. They will be able to get you in and out fast. (minus all the BS "some shops" like to include)

Call me a donkey, but can you not load another dude's protune map and get nearly the same performance? (provided your car has the same mods) Are identical cars so different in a/f behavour that we all have to pay $500-$700 each to maximize performance? If I could split the cost with a buddy and get 97% of the way to a perfect map, I would be happy as punch. I need 3 more horsepower like I need a hole in my head.

My lack of knowlege in this area might be setting me up for a blasting here but why don't we all get together and share maps and $$?

Every car is different. There is no guarantee that the map that works on your buddies car, will also work on yours. Most tuners tune to the edge, so any small percentage difference between yours and your friends car could spell disaster.

So the reason that standard Accessport maps work for groups of cars is because they are tuned to be on the safe side, leaving another ~10% or so available for protuning?

Yup! Differences in cars, local fuel, altitude etc can make a big difference. Even a protuner can't squeeze all the performance out in a couple hours. If you want really fast, and have a hell of a lot of patience and time, do it yourself. A custom tune though is 95% good enough

And sometimes even that doesn't pan out too well. Look at the problems some 07 owners were having with the COBB Stage 1/2 maps.

In my opinion, a OTS map is temporary until you get protuned. I'd never run an OTS map and call it a day.

You would not run a OTS map due to the fact that performance is not maximized... or because it may potentially cause harm if not tuned properly?

I thought the OTS map may not be the best performance, but should be "safe" for all cars. (of that model year, etc.)

It's safer than stock, but thats not saying much with the 07's. The bottom line is every car is different, thats why my car with xyz mods would make different numbers than yours with the same exact mods.

Even with the latest 07 revision from COBB it was speculated my car was knocking at the time of my protune. My car on the OTS map was nowhere near the level of driveability and power as my car with a protune.

And 'safe' is subjective and will vary from car to car which is why I said I think a OTS map is a 'safe' spot to be until your protune.
