Default Launch Control AP

Tried it out yesterday. WOW hang on to your hat it takes off with a rush. I consider myself fairly good at launching a manual trans car, but I never launched like that.

I did have problems and I would like to know if they can be worked out or if the LC is unpredictable and causes problems every time?

1st time I launched I was thrown back in the seat and then a second later I was thrown into the seat belt like the key was turned off. It was alittle abusive.

2nd launch I cranked the FFS limiter to 5500 RPM. This launch was better, but I had some missing, like what you hear when you bouncing off the rev limiter at launch, as I was moving and only cleared after a shift to second.

Im thinking of jacking up the FFS RPM to 6500 to see if this clears it up. I like to rev to 6000rpm before I shift.

Has anyone gotten this ajusted to work consistantly, or is this just a problem child that cant be fixed, or is it me?

IM Stage 1 V103
LC set at 4500 rpm, plenty good enough for now.
FFS set at 5500

Tony

Bump up the FFS, that is what is causing the problem with the shift to second and so on. 65k or 68 should work out excellent.

Thanks I will give that a try.

I was under the impression that the FFS rev limiter wouldnt come into play until
the clutch was engagaed. Wrong again. That twice now this year, I have to start paying more attention.

Yes, Cobb plasters that all over their web site.

How many here have damaged their cars with launch control?

I believe if you dont use it all the time and feather the clutch it will be ok.

Dump the clutch at 5 grand using launch control and you will break something.

Thanks for the warning.

Dump means rev it to 5500 RPM's or whatever the LC is set at and and let the clutch out all the way.

Feather means rev it up to 5500 RPM's or whatever the LC is set at and let the clutch out semi gradually like you kinda would to just start up normally.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats what I meant, but it would be a fast feather. Dont want to burn up the clutch.

So how bad is it for my wideband to be bottomed out lean when launching? Its only for a second or two but still. Also, do we have to worry about floating a valve on the 07 STi's?

Also, I heard FFS pulls timing and doesnt really help times. Any truth to this? And if not does it really harm the motor?

Thanks, Ryan

I found out what I did wrong from the first post. Believe it or not I was adjusting the wrong rev limiter. I had the FFS limiter at 4500rpm and the lauch control at 6500rpm. I would launch and it would bounce off the rev limiter while I was trying to take off and shift. That really shook the car.

I figured it out by pushing the clutch in and reving while driving. When it was limited at 4500 rpm instead of 6500 rpm I knew something was wrong. After reversing the limiters it worked like a charm.

It apears to me that the FFS limiter works all the time whether the clutch is in or out, moving or not. I dont care for that so I set it to 6800rpm to get it out of the way.

IM getting some bad smells when I use it (like rubber burning) I will us it very little. But I like it.

So has any broke anything or had any problems at all using Launch Control?

When I asked Cobb how it worked they said it ignites gas in the manifold to spool the turbo.
Honestly I can only see that being hard on the turbo.

I have done a few LC launchs with mine since I had it protuned.
I set mine to 4k rpm so that the clutch hits at my peak torque.

I can build about 8-10lbs of boost off the line but I launch with less since 8-10lbs gives you a lot of wheel hop.

@ around 5lbs The car launches like a rocket and you get some wheel spin.

I noticed when flat foot shifting the car pulls timing and is slower for a fraction of a second after it is activated. so, I dont use it.
I set the flat foot shifting to 7200rpm so it doesn't come in to play.

I have smelled clutches before, and this was more a rubber smell then burning brakes.
I havent driven it since my last post, but Im thinking the exhaust is getting hot and rubbing on the AC drain. I was using it alot, driving it hard without a cool down.

You could be right.

When she goes i will remove the engine to change it, I hear the pistons need changing (07 ), and while Im there it would be easy to change the turbo, injectors, cams. Hope the clutch dont go that could get expensive.
