Default Can I get a difinitive answer on EGT probe location?

My inclination is to ask my tuner, and do what he says. He says mount it in the DP. I have always heard 6" from the exhaust port of #4, which I believe is drivers side, closest to firewall.

My searching shows many people saying that the DP is a terrible place to put it. And the reasons make sense to me. Theres too much temp change from the exhaust port till after the turbo.

Tuner says they put it in the DP due to varying qualities of EGT probes, and fear that it will break off/damage the turbo.

So once and for all, DP for safety? or header for accuracy?

Gauge is STRI as well.

Also, im getting gruppe-s coated headers, stri directions say to drill and tap. If I weld in a bung, it looks like the probe wouldnt reach in far enough. Drill and tap work okay?

THANKS

Do it in the headers. How often do probes brake off? What is going to brake it. Get a Carbing metal undertray and then nothing can harm it.

Put it in the manifold 6" or closer in cyl 4.

I like to know some more info on this subject as well. My Gruppe-S jet hot coated header does not have a egt bung but I have a larger up pipe with an egr bung I will install when I upgrade my turbo. I've heard that this location is not ideal but what other options do I have besides grinding the $175 coating off enough to weld a bung in the header leaving an unprotected area in the coating.

Sorry you have no more options if you want it to work right.

How important is a egt gauge anyway why not use an a/f instead? I would think an a/f would be a better indicator.

EGT is vitally important because this will not translate into A/F ratios and a High EGT could be bad and a early clue to running too lean.

Up pipe

Reason I say this is yea 4 does run the hottest BUT you are only measuring the egt from 4. If you have a fouled plug adn say 3 is running really lean your not going to know. I say measure the egt as a whole not just one cyl cause then you might be asking for trouble.

Why is it that 4 runs the hottest?

Maybe it has do do with the fuel rail issue in which one cylinder runs a bit leaner than the others under hard acceleration. I had read about this subject on here and some were saying that it has to do with the design of the stock fuel rails does not evenly distribute the fuel to all cylinders.
