Default Datalogging on the track?

It seems to me that the easiest way to log engine parameters (knock, IDC, timing, etc.) it with a Tactrix cable and Enginuity, but I can't exactly have a laptop sitting in my passenger's seat while I'm at the track. Is there an inexpensive datalogging unit that is small enough to tuck away during track use?

No way a seatbelted laptop would pass tech inspection. I guess I can try to figure something out, or just break down and get an AIM digital dash

The issue would be convincing the safety steward it's safe. I'm in the same boat and don't have a good answer

Why does the laptop have to be open? Just set the laptop to not suspend or hibernate when the lid is closed. I'm pretty sure you can have the logging trigger with the defogger switch. Keep the laptop under the passenger seat.

Log before you go to the track. Make sure things are right and you wont need it on the track.

Aside from that, I agree with the guy above. Close the lid and hide it.

No way to replicate the heat and strain that the car endures on the track. I wasn't aware that a computer could be set to not go to sleep when it's closed, that may be the ticket. I could do that and find a way to strap it securely under the seat. Does anyone know how to figure out if my computer can do this? I suck at computers

hey dan, I know this is not the inexpensive route, but what about the plx r800? I mean its a little costly, but you could do some great data logging.

Some manufacturer should create a black box type logger for our cars. I'm imaging something like a UTEC that piggybacks off the ECU but doesn't alter any signaling. It should constantly keep about 2 hours worth of data time stamped. It should also have a external log switch for manual snapshots.

PLX makes a couple of devices like that. The one I posted is in 52mm gauge form but they make 2 different ones that are little boxes with display screens. It's nice because you can also plug external sensors into them like a wideband and fluid temp.
