LOGS
Current map (revision 9)

Hey guys,

Need some help trying to determine if this is normal. I've been on a stage 2+ custom e-tune for about a month and it's been stable, but I've noticed more often than not a few FBKC/FLKC events show up in my logs.

On average there are 1-3 FBKC events in my 15 minute MAF logs and 1 or 2 in my WOT logs, and 1 or 2 FLKC. In both MAF and WOT logs timing pulled is almost always ~1.5 or less but I've seen it as much as -2.8 to -4.2 FBKC on a two occasions (out of 30+ logs).

Is this normal?

My tuner has tried working with me to tweak the map but it seems there is always a little bit of FBKC or FLKC. He says I should ignore the knock in the MAF logs because it's probably just noise. I don't buy that...

Attached are a few sample logs and the full tracker I've been using (snippet of the tracker below):

Car details:

- 2012 STi wagon @ 50450 miles
- 92RON fuel
- 40-45' temps @ 200 ft sea level (Seattle)
- Partly cloudy weather

Stage 2 setup:

1- AEM 21-478WR CAI + heat shield
2- Grimmspeed 3-port EBCS
3- Stock turbo with turbo blanket/nameless heat shield
4- IAP fuel stumble kit [iA-GR-F-V3]
5- Nameless Performance full TBE 3" catted & divorced wastegate w/5" mufflers
6- Crawford AOS V2

Anything at low loads can be disregarded as noise. Unless it goes over -2.8. Anything lower is usually noise. At WOT however it's a different story. Ensure you talk to tuner about that log and always ensure you using top tier gas

Get the car on a dyno. Its a huge challenge for tuners with e-tunes because there's 0 control of conditions. It just takes the task and makes it harder, and unfortunately this is a side-effect.
Disclaimer: I don't take anything away from e tuning its a great resource, with in reason. I just dont understand why someone would want to do it that way. Its like having a mechanic coach a an inexperienced kid through a job using video chat... Problems arise more often.

My 0.02, WOT knock is scary. especially when most people with a pro tune are not seeing any knock events daily.

Good luck with the car man

Some knock at low RPM while just driving around is fine and is probably just going to be false knock. But I wouldn't want to see any at WOT.

Hey Op, I've been researching the same topic area to get a better understanding of what is "normal" vs. "continue to monitor" or "problem". It seems there is no one shot answer really, there are multiple if-thens scenarios involved to determine whether you should be concerned or not.

I came across this article on the Cobb site "The Subaru Knock Monitoring FAQ v2" describes the monitoring of knock and detonation. Currently reading through it myself.

Pretty much agree with everyone in here. FBKC/FLKC are only really concerning at high loads.
@STM.VANN I would agree that a dyno tune is a much better option however some people such as myself live on an island and don't have easy access to an AWD dyno. So there are those types of situations that would preclude someone from getting a dyno tune. Regardless E-Tune > OTS.
