Default snow/sleet driving

After WAY too long of a wait we are finally getting a little snow in CT and I had my first STi in the snow experience. I have snow tires and the car did feel very stable, however if given a little too much gas mid turn the rear end slides out pretty quickly. I expected this, but I'm wondering if I just keep on the gas after the rear steps out should the front gain traction and put me back on line? My instincts told me to get off the gas and slow down, which I did, but if I knew it would be safe to stay on the gas and allow AWD to help pull the car through it would be a lot more fun.

In a nutshell I'm trying to learn the limits of the car in the snow without pushing things too far. Everyone talks about how much fun the STi is in the snow and I want to experience it, but not at the expense of losing control of my brand new 30k+ dollar car. Thanks in advance for any advice on snowy driving.

Default question

we're getting hit with the snow right now. are you driving with the DCCD in locked mode or auto? i noticed the locked mode seems more stable.

I'm going with auto since I figure the car's computer can do the best job. I think lock is really only for when you have to get unstuck. Won't auto put the car into lock if that's most suitable for the conditions anyway?

well weve had plenty of snow in colorado, some last night snow driving was a good time. if u turn and give it gas, and the rear steps out theres a few ways to handle it. if u let off the gas (and this depends on your speed at the time of the slide) the nose might dive and grip and youll straighten out. but if your going 40mph and the rear steps out it could make u spin. i choose the gas countersteer method because its fun and i feel a little more controlled. i just counter steer and adjust the throttle to slowly straighten out.

Find an empty parking lot covered with snow and practise. Do not drive around in the Locked mode.

Why not drive in lock mode in the snow? That's what I've been doing here and we finally got enough snow and ice to have some fun.

I normally countersteer and throttle control it too. But I try to get sideways purpose so I can learn to keep the car under contol in that weather.

I plan on hitting up a parking lot on the way home as I haven't gotten a chance to "slide around with no regards to speed" in a empty lot. I hope it is as fun as people who have posted comments and videos say it is.

Wish me luck!!

I run in full lock in the snow, car is real stable. I found that if you enter a turn and the front end pushes, just gas it a little and the front tires will pull you around.

Still looking for that parking lot so I can experiment more.

The LOCK mode is to get you unstuck or get you through a slippery uphill situation. While in LOCK mode and you make a turn, you force all wheels to turn the same, which is no good. (Ex. When you make a left turn, your left wheels will turn less than the right ones). So, although the road might be slippery you shouldn't take sharp turns in LOCK mode. Protect your differentials from unecessary stress. Drive in Auto.
