| Junior STI Driver | I get rpm between 4 and 5k, as a for instance, there seems to be an engine bog when I hit 2nd? Only 1st to 2nd. !!!!!!!! Why not second to third too? My first turbo!? The bog, or balk varies. If i take more time, it seems to help. Thanks This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |

it gets better with mods. (meaning the lag gets reduced) | |

| Junior STI Driver | so it makes sense this happening ONLY from 1st up to 2nd? I had accepted it as an oddity till the other day, when one bogged launch to 2nd seemed a tad severe. You can't watch my clutch engagement, so I am trying to rule that out . Just that one time, the lag seemed nearly dangerously..what? almost like it wanted to stall.. almost. It only happened that way once, but it got my attention. I will start being more attentive to my feet. But why not from 2nd to 3rd? Thank you, especially to those patient one's who are fairly sure it is my error in technique. |

| Junior STI Driver | Quote flatthump Sounds like your dropping the clutch before you get on the gas....The STi has a very small 'sweet spot'. It just takes practice." By 'sweet' you mean, a weakness or a strength? I am not clear about the small "spot". A short ( aka "small sweet spot" ) opportunity to screw up or to hit a wave of power? I am starting to have a hunch you are right- premature release of left foot. Thanks Last edited by october; 10-23-2006 at 03:29 PM. |

IWSTI Addict since: Jun 2006 Trader Rating: (1) | thanks for the replies, i too was facing the same issue where the sti would sort of bog/ shudder a bit when i was engaging 2nd from 1st. The only way around it was if i let go of the clutch real slow but still there is a slight lurch as the gears engaged. Is this bit of jerk normal for manual cars? Sorry .. this is my first manual in many many years so i am still figuring my way out. |

| Junior STI Driver | But I caught it the other day, where the sensation was almost like running out of gas, which i was not. This car is excellent and nearly new. I plan on playing with it a lot. I just want to rule out anything mechanical. I am happy to own this as my lack of knowledge of turbos. I have never had this issue before, in previous 6 speed, and numerous 5 speeds and 4 speeds. The turbo is the odd man out. but why ONLY in 1st to 2nd and not 2nd to 3rd? Anyone care to illuminate? |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2004 Trader Rating: (0) | It seems to me that any lurching or jerkiness in shifting comes from the same basic source. The speed of the drivetrain is not matched well with the speed of the engine. If the engine is spinning significantly faster than the drivetrain, you get the big lurch forward when coming off the clutch. If the drivetrain is spinning faster, you get the lurch backwards. Things probably get smoother at higher speed (higher gears) because there is a lot more inertia in the car and drivetrain, smoothing things out. Not sure what is happening with you. But if you are having any jerkiness, in either case the answer is the same: Be smoother. This is regarding both the throttle and the clutch. It is difficult to get 100% right 100% of the time. But any racer will tell you smoothness = quickness. |

| Junior STI Driver | With respect: It is not jerky or lurching, as in TOO MUCH misplaced power, the way a teens first attempts at shifting often go, with the poor Dad crossing his fingers, not at all. This is a bogging, a balking a major LOSS of POWER for a second or so. I never had this problem with NA engines. So this relates to turbo boost and my lack of understanding of it, yes? I do not understand boost and waste gate etc. I thought having the rpm at around 4500/5000 gave me sufficient power to just shift as I always do. i am an older guy. OOOOOOOOOOweeeeeeeee. I guess I have to relearn. But the car almost stopped, is that normal? Can you ppl make this happen ( near stall ) with improper use of turbo/clutch at 4000 - 4500 rpm? IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | it sounds like you're letting the revs drop too far while shifting to 2nd. i could be totally wrong though since i can't watch you drive. you say you're shifting out of 1st around 4k, but what rpm is it at after you get 2nd fully engaged? the 1-2 shift is the most difficult on any manual car b/c the change in gear ratios between the 2 is the biggest and b/c they're low gears. moreso on these cars than any other i have driven, b/c of the AWD i think. to make my 1-2 shift smooth and quick i always give gas as i'm bringing up the clutch to keep the revs from falling too far too fast. i don't see how the turbo really comes into play other than just the lag of waiting for it to spool all the way up after getting back on the gas. |

| STI Driver | Grabby clutch and turbo lag causes this. This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |
