I highly recommend Bob Bondurant's High Performance Driving Book (the newest edition). I learned a lot from it, and it cleared up a lot of unclear things related to this topic.

That's engine braking (dropping gears to slow the car).
I wouldn't recommend it!

What the hell? Actually, down-shifting is probably the best way to slow down your car, especially if you are going down a hill, for example. It's much better to let the engine do the braking (does no harm to the engine), than wearing on your brakes all the time.

If you read the owners manual, it even mentions that you should leave the engine IN GEAR when slowing down to help the car slow down. They do NOT recommend clutching out and stopping the whole car with just the brakes.

i think huy is trying to say that one shouldn't use the engine alone to brake. if you're already in the proper gear, you shouldn't downshift to slow down in lieu of the brakes. it puts stress on the engine. brake pads are fairly cheap and easy to replace when compared to engine components. the main purpose of downshifting is to make sure you're in the proper gear/powerband to accelerate after you slow down.

My feet are size 11, but I find my skate shoes are the perfect width for left and right side of my foot heel-toe'ing.

Running shoes actually make my car feel faster because they are lighter, but they are too wide up front, I mess up and accidentally hit the brakes a lot when double clutching.

My CAT casual dress type boot heel (if that makes any sense) makes my foot hit the top of the panel under there and is no good.

I think it would be cool to get a tach on your transmission to watch how they match

Default Shoes (for toe-heel, etc)

Shoes do make a BIG difference. Check out http://www.piloti.com. You can order them online.

A great heel/toe downshift is one step closer to nirvana.

Agreed. I just got some Piloti G16s, and simply put, the difference between normal shoes and these is amazing.

You serious? You would rather use the engine to slow down the car? I don't know about you, but i'd rather put stress on my pads and tyres rather than the motor.

If i'm braking, i'm always in an appropiate gear. I never coast in neutral, ever. You don't have control of the car if you're in neutral. Duh!

so, correct me if i'm wrong (i'm sure i am), but aren't they all the same?

heel toe is just a technique used when revmatching on a downshift and 'double clutching' is used to revmatch a drop of more than one gear (and if not, why the extra step of releasing the clutch in neutral only to immediately reengage? isn't it bad to be in neutral around a corner?)?

i did. i also read the link to heel-toeing. and my question remains. i am sure of what rev-matching is. from the heel-toe link, i am pretty sure that it is a technique for rev-matching... the double clutching i am still unsure of. which is why i asked the question: 'double clutching' is used to revmatch a drop of more than one gear (and if not, why the extra step of releasing the clutch in neutral only to immediately reengage? isn't it bad to be in neutral around a corner?)?
