IWSTI Addict since: May 2003 Trader Rating: (5) | I'm new to driving a stick and I picked up my new 06 STI yesterday and have been revving the engine to about 1,500 RPM and then slowly letting out the clutch until I start moving. This has been working PERFECTLY for me and i'm very smooth launching my car like this, but I was told by a friend that what i'm doing is wrong and will burn out my clutch??? Is this true? If what i'm doing is wrong, then what's the proper way to launch my car for daily driving at stop lights and whatnot so I don't ruin my clutch? Thanks This ad is not endorsed by this member. As long as it's smooth without lots of lengthy clutch slippage at high revs then you're probably fine....& you'll get better with practice. Enjoy your new car and don't worry about the clutch.

| Junior STI Driver | What you're doing is fine. Just make sure that once you get moving you take your foot completely off the clutch. Rest it on the dead pedal next to the clutch. Only touch the clutch pedal when you're shifting, and your clutch should last. |

I don't think he's talking about hard launching...he's simply referring to getting the car moving. And yeah as long as you aren't letting the clutch out ridicously slow, it should be fine. You'll get to the point where its all second nature, and it'll be a nice, fluid motion getting the car to start moving...

IWSTI Addict since: Jan 2006 Trader Rating: (1) | That's not a 'Launch' that's just a start. a launch is when you accellorate close to the cars limits. any time you give it less then 2K rpms IMNSHO its just a start. launching starts at about 3500 |

i was a bad stick driver when i got mine, what does that have to do with anything? so maybe his clutch will last 2,000 miles less then yours, who cares? inexperience with a manual does not mean inexperience with driving or driving powerful cars.

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2004 Trader Rating: (4) | what your doing isn't a "launch" in the true sense of the word. your basically just getting the car moving from a stop and as long as your letting the clutch out relatively quickly (that doesn't mean it has to be violent, just smooth) you'll be fine. truely launching the car is when you rev it to about 5000-6000rpm and either slip the clutch very quickly, or dump it. |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2005 Trader Rating: (3) | Try learning the friction point of your clutch. If you know where the friction point is, you will know how far you can let out your clutch before stalling out. I first learned to drive stick shift with the same method you are using now. But two weeks later, I learned my friction point, and what I did is release the clutch and give it a little gas. This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |
