Default Pls share your shifting rpm?

For those who have a STI. AT what rpm do you shift gears for the following reasons.

1> Crusing, but wanna get going fast.
2> Crusing, but wanna save gas as well
3> Regular street driving, but wanna be the 1st in line.

Eg. from stop to 1st, 1500rpm, then go 3200rpm @ 2nd, etc...

It would be nice if you can share more, that way, we can all learn something here!

Thanks

I am kind of new to stick and STI (less than 10 days). I kind of find that both 1st and 2nd gears are low, and it does seems to pull much better once I go to 3rd or 4th gears. So, if you wanna to lanuch fast, but not racing speed, what would be your steps?

i find that shifting at about 3k rpms from 1st to second is smooth enough. i feel the same way about the car feeling better when i drive harder but right as of right now i am trying to conserve fuel so soft driving for now. 2800-3400 rpm range is good for conserving fuel

My shift light is set to 5500 rpm (which means when I react, it's usually in the 6000+ range). Check out the May '06 issue of Road & Track for gas saving techniques for driving enthusiats. More fuel is wasted when you gradually accelerate to cruising speed. But that didn't really change my driving habits....maybe, it just justified them .

For me, when traffic conditions allow:

1 = WOT to cruising speed.
2 = WOT to cruising speed.
3 = WOT to cruising speed.

4 (stuck behind slow moving traffic) = shift between 3000-5000 rpm.

All that equates to.... man, I love this car!

I've been driving stick/shifting on bikes for quite some time now and to tell you the truth, i don't even look down at the tach much anymore (dirt bikes don't have any guages anyway). I kinda like do it by feel/sound. (unless of course i'm on a drag strip or race track) After a while, shifting becomes second nature.

When taking off fast, you'll feel that the car is or has gone past the powerband. That would be a good indication to shift. Give it some time, (definitely more than 10 days) then you'd get the feel for it.

I'm sorry but i doubt there are such things as "cruising" or "regular" driving or "saving gas" on an STi . Or at least i just don't have the patience and dicipline for it.

Might not be much of a help but i hope you learned something.

Earl

This is exactly how I feel. If I baby my car it doesn't feel right. It's very jerky and just doesn't feel normal. Also if I shift under 4k I noticed it is too jerky. This car was not built to be driven like a stock civic.

My STi isn't my daily driver so when I get in it I drive it however I feel like driving it. So I don't really pay much attention to my shift points. But when I'm focusing on flat out acceleration I shift at 6000 RPM's. The power seems to drop off at about that point.

For fuel conservation your worst enemy is your brakes. You use a lot of gas getting up to speed and the last thing you want to do is use your brakes so you can use another big gulp of gas to get back up to speed. So your best bet is to keep enough space between you and the car in front of you so that if you need to slow down you can put the car into neutral and coast. That way you can slow down without using the brakes and you get extra distance out of the gas you used to get up to that speed to begin with. Driving like this got me an extra 5 mpg out of my daily mule.

the car will drive perfectly smooth at under 4k, you just need to work a little bit on smoother clutch release. i had to adjust my seat several times before i was in the optimal angle/position for steady/smooth release.
