Default Blipping the Gas

I'm having trouble blipping the gas pedal. I put my ball of the foot on the brake and I want to use my heel when blipping but my gas pedal is about an inch or two lower than the brake pedal and I can't reach it. Any tips?

You are either:

A: not twisting your ankle enough to accomplish the task
B: not applying enough force to the brake pedal to sink it to the level of gas pedal

I'd say it's a little of A and a little of B, depending on the circumstances. The thing to remember is that YOU have to be able to adapt. Keep practicing. The easiest/safest way to do it is with the car parked and off

Make sure you use minimal toe on the break pedal.

When I do this its almost like I al using the side of my foot more than my heel to blip the throttle. It may be because my size 13 shoes run into the side of the footwell when I try to sue my heel. This is just the way I have gotten used to doing.

try using the other side of your foot (ball on brake and the other on the gas) that is the only way I can do it. I have tried but cannot use my heel

^^^I do it similar to that diagram, but with the lower right part of my foot (just a little north of the heel)

There are 2 technics for blipping the throttle depending on how you're driving.
Before gong into that, the term heal-toe is not quite exact for the kind of pedal we have. You would use your heel only if you have pedal like bmws have, pedals that are attached to the floor.

For our case if you are in traffic or in town, and not braking too hard, basically you only gonna brake with two toes while trying to reach the throttle. You won't need much throttle since you never (at least I don't) get in very high RPMS in town.

If you're driving hard then blipping the throttle becomes much easier. First, please brake with all your foot, not just a part of it, otherwise you're gonna loose a lot of your feel. When it's time to blip the throttle, just twist your foot and the throttle will slide under the middle of your foot.

It's hard at the beginning but you'll get it, just practice!

I do it just like the diagram illustrates. But just like Genepy said, it takes practice.

Just rotate your right leg at the hip and knee until your heel is over the throttle and extend your ankle. This is the most universally effective approach, and becoming comfortable with this method will allow you to adapt relatively quickly to the widest variety of pedal layouts.

The STi's throttle may feel a little low when you're braking lightly, but remember that you don't want the throttle to be too high when you're braking hard. Personally, I think the OEM WRX/STi pedal layout works very well.

Of course you can make all sorts of adjustments to pedal sizes, shapes and positions to suit a personal style, but learning to make the adjustments in your technique rather than in the car, will ultimately give you a more powerful skill set. Say for example you attend a school in a rented race car or you're instructing at an autoX event. Don't you want to be able to translate your heel/toe skills quickly to that environment?

You might try just just manipulating the throttle and brake simultaneously while the car is running, but at rest. You could reinforce this by holding the brake and reving a bit at stop lights... as long as that doesn't get you unwanted attention from other drivers.

Agreed!! When I was just learning to heel/toe I would practice by doing this. While im BRAKING for a light im simultaneously trying to keep the revs at a constant speed..i.e. like 2800 Rpm. This gave me the muscle memory needed to blip the throttle towards different desired rpm ranges.

Same for me. Maybe I just have big feet, but side-to-side works much better than trying to use my heel.
