Default Why do I bog so bad in between fast shifts?

When I am racing (shifting fast), the boost drops and my car bucks once or twice and then goes again. It doesn't do it everytime, but does do it at the most inconvenient times. I have tried different shifting techniques and still get the same problem. It's like the car jerks for a second as I shift into the next gear under full throttle. This is not helping my 1/4 mile times at all. Some one has got to have experienced this before. I would be surprised if mine is an isolated incident. Anyone?

What RPM's are you shifting at?
Are you just letting the clutch fly out?

sounds like driver error.. i am sure you know this.. but like PT said.. you cannot just drop the clutch even when the gas is on the floor... you will jerk..

I am shifting between 6500 and 7000 rpm. I am shifting fast, but shifting properly. Push the clutch in, shift into next gear, let the clutch out, stomp on the gas.........

I am hoping I am doing something, then I know it can be fixed. Although I doubt this is the case. This is my first turbocharged car, but I have had several stick shift cars before and have never experienced anything like this........

gosh, i am no good at explaining stick, but for max power you are in no way letting the clutch all the way out before using gas. using gas while bringing clutch out decreases your time on the clutch and powers you out of each gear.. make sure you are giving ample gas for the speed in which you are letting the clutch out.

getting clutch out and then mashing gas is not proper. i release clutch with some gas to ease the transaction and provide a smooth ride out of each gear. hope that helped. sorry if that is not what you are looking for.

If it is just driver error then practice makes perfect; do a hundred or so full throttle upshifts, it will be good for your soul and your technique.
However, another thing to consider is tuning problems. Did the car do this when you first got it and it was stock? My old mustang used to hesitate just as the supercharger started making boost due to a temporary rich condition in the engine. Since your sig says you are running a typhoon and other threads have discussed the typhoon making the STi run rich, it might be an intake problem. Check your bumper near the exhaust to see if you have excesive carbonation around the exhaust tip (vague indication of running rich). If so, then it might be worth either getting a good pro-tune from a shop or seeing if switching to the stock intake box and resetting the CPU cures the problem.

what ^he said. you're not giving it enough throttle as you release the clutch.

Try:
  • different Cobb maps
  • removing the AP altogether
  • resetting the ECU

I had the same problem in my STi when I was getting used to it. Personally, I think it has something to do with the Subaru drivetrain setup? The Evo and R32 do not exhibit this type of behavior.

Like the others have said, it is proper balance of the clutch and throttle. It took my a while to figure it out, but you can engage quickly and smoothly at the same time. I shift extremely fast(my old drag racing habits die hard) in my STi, as fast as you can while still using the clutch. Every once and a while I will get the hesitation between shifts, just not as much as I used to.

It sounds like you are shift-bogging. Sounds silly and I hadn't heard it until someone mentioned it to me, but it definately can happen and its pretty much what everyone else is describing without with the term.

That happens to me when I let the clutch out faster then I would give it gas.

Same. It took me a while to get used to this as the effect seems more pronounced with a turbo car (and it might have something to do with the electronic throttle.) My RSX never exhibited this effect.

Now that I'm used to the clutch/throttle, when I shift, I find myself coming off the throttle less than I would in my RSX. It makes a HUGE difference as, especially on the 1-2 shift as the nose doesn't drop and the power in the next gear is damn near instantaneous.
