Default Re: anyone else start in 2nd gear?

ok, thanks for the input guys. i always start in 2nd (on flat gound) and never have any problems with the engine bogging. i just take off like normal at about 1000k rpm's and don't have to make the cluch slip or engine bog to get her moving, 1st is just too short to me and our cars have plenty of power to do it, i dunno, that's just me.

quick question for the 07 Sti owners out there:
how much taller are your gears then us '04,'05,'06 guys? for example, in my 05 i'm at about 3100-3200k rpm's when at 80mph in 6th, what rpm's are you at when cruising at 80mph?

I'll start in second if I have any momentum whatsoever, say at a stop sign. I'll also start in second when making a left turn at a light. Mid turn shifts annoy me.

I really enjoyed that car. Tight gearbox with a good differential and torquey little engine. The only thing I hated about it was the completely unadjustable rear suspension. I might get BBQ'd for saying this, but stock for stock I thought it was more fun to drive than my old WRX was.

I know, I thought my STi was kinda slow by comparison until I went stage 2. I had my rear beam bent to gain some 'adjustability' back there, which helped a lot.

For my 04 I think 80 MPH @ 6th is at 3500 but I'll have to double check.

From a complete stop, I use first - if I have any momentum at all I'll use second.

Except occasionally in winter - starting from a stop on really slippery ice (like, studded tires required ice, not just a bit of snow or whatever, snow tires handle that fine), starting in second is actually much easier. It's not really a concern in the new STI due to AWD and traction-control, but in my previous car (2002 RSX Premium) that was often the only way I could get it moving, especially if it was uphill and nicely polished ice from other idiots spinning their tires too much.
