When I was learning how to drive stick, on my S2000, I would usually start in second. I don't know why, but I could get a smoother launch that way. And even if I started in 1st gear, I usually didn't have to worry about mid-turn shifts. I love having a sky-high redline in my cars.

i feel like im eating away the clutch when starting from a dead stop in 2nd... from a roll of any kind ill go in second but even around a U turn or a left/right turn i still go 1st gear

The main reason you don't want to start up in second from a stop is that you have to slip the clutch more to get it going. That increases your clutch wear an order of magnitude from starting up normal in 1st gear. Go ahead and start in second gear, but I prefer getting a couple of hundred thousand miles out of my clutch then spending money on replacing it.

I don't usually use 2nd from a complete stop, however if i have any kind of momentum i will almost always use 2nd and not try to jam into 1st; the car just doesn't like it. I would imagine that starting in 2nd would put more wear on your clutch.

I also skip 3rd every once in a while depending on the situation.

the only way you are going to get a couple hundred thousand miles out of a clutch is if they are all hwy miles.

My thoughts exactly. An STi clutch with 200,000 miles on it would be..........well..........quite impressive. But boring getting through the miles I'd bet.

I managed to get 176,000 miles and 17 years or so out of a clutch on my old BMW before swapping it out when I was having a rear main seal replaced. BMW technician thought the clutch could have gone a few more years before needing replacement. But it was one of those "well as long as we're in there" situations so we went ahead with a new clutch.

No, but I skip 3rd gear when putting around. The drop in RPM from 3rd to 2nd is useless, so I just go 1-2-4-5-6 unless I'm going WOT.

I have started in Fourth before not to long ago to be exect. I was like what the hell is my car so boggie for then I snap to and relized I was in fourth gear. I was able to start from a dead stop in 4th. I was like holy hell.

in my integra i know it's completely different from AWD but i'd start in second when the conditions were really snowy out. just my .02

in my integra i managed to start in 3rd from a stop... boggie...

but on the sti i always start in 1st unless im on a downhill of some sort, im not a fan of slipping the clutch and in 2nd unless i slip its a little too boggie for my taste...
