6th gear is the same 04 and up IIRC.

Should be fine. Might be better as far as saving gas and less wear than starting in second.

seems like a good way to wear out your clutch faster than starting in 1st gear.

perfectly fine and works for increasing gas mileage

GM implemented this in 6 speed Corvettes and V8 Fbody's called "skip shift". If you shifted out of 1st gear before a certain engine speed a plunger inside the tail of the transmission would pop out and guide the shift rod into 4th gear.

I agree.

Forcing it into 1st gear while still moving is an even better way to wear out your synchros. Most people have experienced the fact that once the car is moving, the transmission doesn't like to go into 1st.

Ok I must have misunderstood his post, once the car is rolling I hardly ever go into 1st gear. Starting in 2nd gear from a dead stop is what I understood him to be talking about....and although the car is certainly capable of starting in 2nd and even 3rd gear you have to slip the clutch more than normal and just not worth it IMO.

I thought that was an automatic only feature.

Nope, was an annoying feature on the T-56 6speeds, nothing a 25 cent resistor couldn't take care of though

Some of the automatic transmissions like the 4L60e had the option and often did start in 2nd gear though to increase fuel economy.

You learn something new every day. I think I would get pissed if I had my hand on or near the shifter getting ready to grab 2nd and the shifter pulled itself into 4th gear.

Ya it's a PITA, you would go to grab 2nd gear and it would be blocked and only let you shift into 4th gear. It actually caused me to almost get rearended a few times so I got rid of it.
