Aside from some M&S rated tires, maybe a precleaner on the airfilter, there is not a lot you can do. Good luck....

To maybe clarify abit is it a wise idea to do such a thing.
I'm just tired of all those people around my town with big lifted trucks and quads going off to have fun in the desert I would love to see the look on there faces when they see a four door sedan riding along next to them in the middle of the desert......

i mean you can take anything off road, i had the best time of my life in a friggen geo metro taking it through the woods untill the suspension bottomed out. You better know what youre doing... stay in the ruts, keep your speed up, use higher gears.. uh dont spin your tires and dont stop moving

It is a terrible idea. I just wasn't going to say anything before. If you have any doubt, then don't do it. Get a bike or a quad if you want to go play in the desert...

as usnsti said, check out dirtyimpreza...lots of cali guys who play in the desert, several in STis specifically. sand can find it's way into some nasty places. it is definitely hard on paint, so get mud flaps if you care. it is not a mild environment, but it certainly looks like a lot of fun!

this is the first DI video, when they were playing in the sand:

I wouldn't do it. A friend of mine went on leave for a week at the beach with his girlfriend and his Outback (not sure the model year). This was last summer. He drove it extensively in the sand/dunes during the week. Granted, this guy was kind of a dumba**, but when he got back, the car had major problems. It was losing power and making lots of weird noises including grinding noises. He and his other mechanic buddy put it in a garage and started taking things apart to clean & repair. They worked on it for a solid month. Every time they took something else off, they would find more things that needed to be taken off. That sand can get into everything with extended exposure.

It is not the best idea. I ride a dirt bike and judging from the fact that you get sand in every part of your engine and its a pain in the ass to get out, I don't think you would want to spend 5 or 6 hours trying to get every grain of sand out of your engine block. In the long run it will ruin your engine. It can clog your intake and get into your air filter. The worst part is that sand can make it into your pistons and that wouldn't be good.
