Default hairpin technique troubles

I can't understand exactlly how to approach a hairpin turn. If you are preparing for an e-brake assisted turn, do you want to be on the gas through most of the turn, or have the clutch depressed until facing in the proper direction. It would seem to me, if you had it in gear throughout the turn you could control throttle at the same time giving more control IMO. But this means you have to be in first entering the turn, and it's hard to keep good enough speed in only first gear. Otherwise, it seems if you went into the turn, "rolling" with the clutch depressed, you would be completely relying on the ebrake to turn you. I would think this would cause dely after the turn for you have to re-engage first, ect. and not be on power the entire time. Any input is appreciated thanks

are you trying to do this on tarmac? if so, you probably want to try it on something looser first. the e-brake is only used to rotate the car. the point of sliding sideways into the turn is to slow down while already pointing in the correct direction, so that you can get on the gas earlier.

please don't try this on a street near me...

I am on gas "slightly" after a downshift and e-brake to start rotate and on full throttle to pull through...I have been practicing and this works for me...I have a great closed road near me to do his and it is fun with almost 400 lb/ft wtq...

thanks I guess i just have to practice, I've gotten used to flicking the brake, I just need to get on it earlier to pull the momentum through the turn, otherwise you turn, pause, then go, aka losing time, and don't worry thegraystig, I've only totalled 32 cars so far.

lol...32 is respectable.

what kind of tires and what type of surface are you trying to do this on? if you've got a lot of grip, this will not be faster. not sure if you're trying to drift or rally, but even in tarmac rallies, you'll see some drivers take a lot of turns like road racers. if you're trying to drift, find an event. the instructors there will get you drifting much more quickly and stop any bad habits early.

GS-D3s or A/S? even if it's clean tarmac, i'd expect the all-seasons to break loose easily enough, but unless you have a really tight suspension (maybe stock is enough) and some extra hp, i'd think the GS-D3s would be tough to do this with. i've also heard that they are difficult to play with at the limit, but i've never had them on anything other than my Legacy, where I can play with them squealing at the limit all day long...

so i'm guessing you are trying to drift then? maybe someone with some drifting experience can help you...i really only practice sliding in snow, ice, mud, sand, and gravel. my pavement sliding is minimal, and i've never been in a full drift on dry pavement in my STi.

Here's an old vid.. If you watch it all the way thru there's a few turns just like you describe. Not one of them did I use the e-brake. While this is on gravel, you can do the same on asphalt. It's just a bit trickier.

how tight of a hairpin are we talking? i really, really tight one i clutch in then launch out of it because thats the only way i can get wheelspin, a longish one id probably heel toe into first and then still clutch in and launch out because well..cable ebrakes are..finnicky and very hard to control precisely, a hydraulic rally ebrake is a different story.

ebraking hairpins on tarmac seems to be useless for a faster time imo, but if you are doing it this is how i'd go about it;

be in lower gear approaching the turn be off gas hard and yanking the ebrake, but as soon as the ebrake starts engaging you need to be back on the gas......kinda like a scandanavian flick ebrake.

good lord... 32?

No offense meant by this but,
I'd say invest in some driving lessons you could very well be the worst driver I have ever heard of.

I first started racing when I was 6 in karts and have never "totalled" a car.
I've had a couple of wrecks during races but never once totalled a car or truck.

Any way, having spent most of my teenage years racing off road trucks and recently driving SCORE trucks.

How I rotate my STi for a hair pin is like this.

I enter a corner and start to trail brake then when I want to pivot I give the brakes a quick jab and turn in once the car starts to rotate I apply gas and power slide.
you can pull the ebrake after jabbing the brakes and starting your turn in to get the car to rotate quicker if you want.

I have only driven a fully prepared rally car a few times but the e-brake on them is completely different.

I have no idea what your doing that your wanting to ebrake around corners but,
If it is a car with a stock ebrake setup I can't see how your going to be faster doing it and if I was you I'd spend the time learning to do it without touching the ebrake

Ya allwheeldriven, I mean I tend to buy a new car every week cause i'm ballin' like that, so it doesn't matter how many I total. Cops let me speed too, I've never had a ticket, and pigs fly in the magical land of lolipops and gumdrops.
