I'd say just rev match and you're good.

umm, they are the different IIRC.
Rev match would be like 5th to 4th clutch in, rev (put into 4th), let up clutch..
double clutch is same as FFS flat floor shifting or "no lift shift" where the gas stays on the floor as you shift through gears..

This first question is too vague. Are you talking best for speed/ performance. or mileage?

Double Clutch does not equal flat foot shifting. A double clutch shift goes like this (5 -4 example) clutch in, move shifter to neutral, clutch out, rev, clutch in, move shifter to 4, clutch out. It can be done for up or downshifts. I find that on cold mornings before the fluids have warmed up I need to double clutch my upshifts for smoother engagement.

illinisti is right... double clutching say from 5 - 4 would be like driving in 5th, clutch(1) and put it in neutral, blip the throttle, clutch(2) put in 4th and go...

i dont normally couble clutch for my upshifts but for down shifts i do for smoother transaction and less stress on synchros..

That is correct

But is the OP referring to downshifting, of just driving in general?
In general, be smooth with everything - from shifting, to steering, braking, acceleration, etc. Also, never lug the engine (e.g. flooring it at 2000 rpm in 5th gear).

So in this day and age whats the point of double clutching? I play around with the technique if i am having a boring drive sometimes, but it does not seem at all superior to the regular rev matching.

Doubling clutching will do nothing to help your transmission. It may be easier in the cold, as mentioned, but its not going to help anything.

Another old technique that does not apply to today's transmissions.

so if your on the freeway downshifting from 6 to 4... you just clutch, 4, and slowly let upthe clutch??

all i can say is, "what's up synchros and clutch?"

If I were going from 6 to 4 I'd clutch in, rev it, throw it in 4 and let the clutch out. No need to double clutch at all.
