Default Help Make My Car Auto X And Track Worthy

Hello All My Subie Comrades,

(First, I'm praying this thread isn't redundant.)

That said, I have decided once and for all to NEVER drag my car. I have an 07 urban gray limited WRX. My decision never to drag has changed my endeavors and plans for my car performance-wise. I would like all and any input that will help me build an all-round competitive auto-X and circuit car. Please feel free to suggest any brands over others and post any no-nos and stay-away-froms. I'll be sure to heed your warning. If you could enter your input/mods in the following format it would be most efficient for me and other users interested in this thread. I really appreciate all of your help and advice. Thanks, beforehand, to all those who subscribe. Cheers!

Since you're asking about helmets, I'm assuming you don't have any experience Auto-Xing or tracking your car. That being the case I would learn to drive first. That's not a knock on you, but the car has more potential stock than you would be able to take advantage of. Modding the car is only a "band-aid" to the real reason why the car is slow. That being you.

Mod the driver, not the car. Well, at least before the car.

I think this is a great idea im lookin to do exactly the same. Theres threads out there describing auto-x/ daily driver cars but they tend to get scattered. This one might stay on track.

About You:

Your Car (Year/Model): 07 OBP Sti
Your Car's Build/Purpose/Goals/What you want out of your car: Primarily daily driver with 5-8 track days a year in mind.
Other Comments: The car is currently stock these are all future plans over the next year.

Suggestions for Building the Ultimate Street-able Auto-X/Circuit Car:

Engine Suggestions (Turbo, Engine Management, Intercooler, etc): Cobb Accessport, Protuned, Invidia N1 resonated exhaust(kartboy exhaust hangers), Invidia catted v3 downpipe, Walbro fuel pump, upgraded injectors, APS 70mm CAI. Stock internals, turbo, intercooler.

Electronics (Gauges etc): Factory boost gauge(I like the placement of it seems more practical to me)

Transmission (5MT; gears, mounts, clutch, flywheel etc.) TiC's holy shift set, TiC klunk killer, Factory short shifter, Upgraded clutch and flywheel(Brand undecided), Stock transmission.

Suspension (Sway bars, Struts, Coil overs, springs, lateral links, etc): Cusco 22mm rear sway, Cusco 22mm front sway, RCE yellow springs, Stock struts(Possibly Ohlins or Bilstein RB320s later on), Whiteline antilift kit-comfort bushings, Kartboy endlinks, whiteline steering bushings, RCE lowering camber plates, prodrive bumpstops.

Whees/Tires: Haven't researched this catergory much yet. Stock until searched.

Brakes:SS brake lines, Perrin master cylinder support brace. Stock pads are still almost brand new will change to something with a little less brake dust down the line.

Safey (Helmets, Harnesses, etc): Full face helmet. Stock seat belts.

Other Comments/Suggestions/SubaRudeBoy07 is a tool?: In Auto-x IMO Driving skills, Tires and suspension are the biggest factors. Those would be the ones i would spend the most time on. A lot of the answers are going to depend on your budget. If i had an unlimited budget I could make my list much more comprehensive but this is what will fit into my lifestyle without making me a hobo. Plus a stereo, V-limited lip, wheels and painted headlights for the ladies. Oh and you are a tool. Just kidding good luck.

Thanks for the helpful advice; although, this thread was really meant for compiling specific advice about performance mods and not driving itself. [See driving techniques or driving school.] The "safety" section was just for suggestions about products and fellow subie drivers' experience with various products related to enhancing auto-Xing and circuit racing. This thread was created to help other users, like me, to find out about adequate mods, such as turbos and suspension that will make the driving experience more aggressive and competitive, given that we have the driving experience to use those mods. There is a certain mod path, as I'm sure others will agree, that are more specific to circuit racing as opposed to drag racing.

Also this thread is for anyone who just enjoys spirited driving; a more powerful turbo or taking a turn at high speeds never fails brings a grin to a Subie owner's face. Isn't that as much a part of the driving experience as knowing how to use those mods in a safe way? More than just making amazing times and looking good out there, how can we make our stock rides more fun, how can we get more of a rush by modding our cars, and how can we make better decisions about our mods by using great platforms like IWSTI to gather that knowledge by valuing the opinion of others? I think these underlying questions better represent my motives for creating this thread. I also feel strongly that this will resonate with other subie fans prowling around this thread with a hunger for even more Subie-fun than their stock car already provides or better alternatives for the mods they already have.

Thanks again for your posts so far. Keep them coming! Casual subie-talk itself can be so fulfilling. So I hope everyone else shares in the same relaxed, open-minded and intriguing experience of reading these posts and being a part of the Subie-network. ::cheers::

Gormansscooby, Thanks for taking the time to respond with your insightful, and thoughtful post. This is exactly how I hope the thread will continue. It'll be like an archive NOT OF CURRENT MODS NECESSARILY, but a parts list of some realistic-dream auto-X/track car that doesn't hit the hundred-thousand dollar tag of WRCs. Awesome! i think you speak to my second response, post #4, precisely! Thanks again!

Well... I can offer advice... but first there are a few other questions you need to think about. What class in auto-X are you planning on running? Do you want to be competitive or just go out and have fun? Are you planning to just do some open lap days or are you actually going to try to do some SCCA Race events and get your competition license?

For AutoX, if you want to run stock then you are only able to change out your front sway, your struts [note: cant change springs], same size wheels [+/- 6mm offset], brake pads/fluid, harness, and a bolt in harness bar. If you are planning on modding, you might as well go up to either ESP or straight to SM. STU you are going to be against all the Evo's and STIs. But ESP/SM you are going to be spending a pretty penny to be competitive.

Track days... doesnt really matter. SCCA Race Circuits... make sure you dont do anything to completely outclass yourself, same as AutoX.

Yeah, first things first...what class? SM, ESP, A-Stock?

Your best first mod is they stickist tires allowed in your class. Next best mods are camber adjustments and maybe sways.

Then again the very best mod allowed is seat time.
