Every one of my friends who 'sets' the ebrake at the line breaks an axle if they hook. The ebrake dissengages the center diff electromagnet allowing the rear end to take all the shockload hence breaking the axles.

I know a lot of people might find this offensive, but too bad. I'm not certain I want to do it anyway, just getting the info. Unless someone wants to buy my STi. Needs to be re-financed, but only 5500 miles.
ok for what ever reason you want to do this cant you just remove the front axles

Hey I'm quite new & I am also thinking of this RWD conversion.. Simply because I want to drift! Only time will tell though & I think I would be better getting a RWD car such as an S15..

Why won't this thread die? And yes a RWD car is in both yours and the poor Subies best interest.

It may be sacrilege to some, but this has interested me for several years. You would be removing the weight of two diffs and two halfshafts, with almost all of that weight coming off the heavy front. You could use a lightweight two-piece carbon-fiber driveshaft. Who needs FWD on a pavement-driven sports car? I also have a Corvette, and I can't see much benefit in adding two diffs and two halfshafts; if I want to off-road, I'll rent a truck. See the Feb '08 issue of C&D for an 880-hp RWD Lamborghini Gallardo.

Ever been beat by an SRT-4? How about RSX-S with a turbo? The point is the AWD is killing the car for speed, which is what it gets used for most often. I have suffered because of the complete lack of top end, even with 2# extra boost. How many times have I road raced, or needed the AWD? Maybe 3 times. How much do I use the power on the street strip or highway? A hell of a lot more. Why not get a Mustang or SRT-4? Because I don't like how they look nor did I wish to buy an American auto. You forget that most race cars are forced to use RWD and fair fine, if not better on the slalom.

I was planing on going big HP anyway, which will basically require the complete replacement of the internals, clutch, drivetshafts, etc. so why not just go RWD and eliminate the need for costly DCCD and front differential replacement? Or better yet, someone else buy it and save it from me and let me get another Supra.
if you wanted something for straight line top end or off the line launches, you made the wrong choice. the WRX/STi is built around handling through the curves. it can carry a higher speed through the bends a lot better than many other options costing much more.

v8 muscle for launching and straight line power (and oval tracks).
awd turbo rally cars for finesse and skill!
