Exclamation Power steering line broke..ok to remove fuse and drive in the mean time?

hey guys,

Tha hardline on my power steering line cracked the other day, not a huge deal and luckily I caught it right away, but all the power steering lines in subaru NA are on back order. I plan on removing it tonight and just having a nice Steelbraided one made at a local shop tomorrow. My question is can I just remove the fuse for the power steering pump in the mean time and drive the car without power steering?

I would assume this would be ok, but thought...why not ask my subaru brothers. so...opinions? thoughts?

This is sort of urgent because I keep killing myself getting up butt crack early to take the bus to work just because I am afraid of hurting my baby. I need a way to go get my tools to remove the line tonight.

-Ryan

You'll be fine. Just make sure to plug up all the holes.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR! Regurdless of any fuse you pull the power steering pump is driven by a belt. So, the pump will continue to try to move fluid and if there is no fluid to move then you will destroy your power steering pump.

Even if he had removed the belt, he could have still possibly caused damage to the steering rack. In a worst case situation anyway.

For a short distance, it would have been OK IMHO. In fact, I am working on removing the PS in my car. I've discussed this at length with a steering rack guru.

Why are you removing you P/S? Where are you gonna source a manual rack from? Are you gonna fab your own?

I know your trying to lose some weight here but do you really think that your are going to be able to properly control and AWD car without power steering? I assume with all this weight loss your going for a 1/4mi car but you have to take into consideration that being AWD our cars can really make some sudden movements if given some gas in a corner or coming into a corner and without power assistance I dont think it would be to safe because I do not think you could respond quick enough to the car to compenasate for anything it might do. IMHO, but hey if all you want is weight loss more power to you in your quest.

The rack I'm installing is a quick rack with 11:1 ratio... under speed, I like the feel of manual steering better...

With all the weight loss, I am actually going for a good track car... if all I wanted was 1/4mi, weight wouldn't be too much of a concern since I could just slap a huge heavy turbo on the front and do 10's all day long

I've driven manual cars... PS cars with the belt removed... and I'm confident the Subaru STI won't be much different than the others... in fact, I'm confident it will be BETTER since the PS system is actually separate from the actual rack... so in theory, removing it doesn't affect the lubrication like on some other cars... it is PURELY to make it easier to steer at low speeds... at high speeds, it is not an issue... but I will report back once I actually get it installed.
