| Junior STI Driver | My 06 STi has 1400 miles (not 14k...) and I just had the tranny apart. I found this: ![]() and this ![]() This is the dual tapered bearing at the end of the main shaft sfter 6th gear. There is damage showing. Why would this happen on essentially a new car? There were no mods or hard starts or hard shifts, all OEM fluids... TIA Ray This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |

| Junior STI Driver | Tires were in good shape, I kinda doubt that this could have been caused in less that 100 miles. This bearing is on the main shaft - could the main shaft be as a friend of mine says 'buggered'? TIA Ray |

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2006 Trader Rating: (3) | My car had 26 miles on it and I worry about what happened during those miles because 26 miles of abuse is a ton. These cars need a very tame break in and it worries me that I might reep the raping break in, later in time, but I know I'll just replace whatever it is with something better to begin with, so |

IWSTI Addict since: Jan 2006 Trader Rating: (2) | ^^^ yeah, why is your tranny apart (by you!) at this mileage anyway? I doubt that the markings on your bearings would have made any noise that can be heard over all the other normal noises. Unlike rings, roller bearings dont really need to break in. They may seat in a little bit and free up a bit after a few heat/stress cycles but actual break in is not an issue. In motocross race bikes, there is a recomended 15 minute ring/piston seating period after a rebuild but nothing as far as the bearings etc are advised (and they have both ball and roller style bearings). Since you had proper (oem) oil, I would say that the markings are either from some type of contamination/foreign object or due to less that proper assembly/manufacturing techniques. As a preloaded style bearing, it is possible that the preload wasnt set correctly or that the machining is slightly off. As bad as that looks, I doubt that you would have had any kind of actual "failure" due to that bearing alone. Keep us updated and tell us the whole story... |

| Lurker | How deep are those marks or are they just visual? If it's just visual don't worry about it but if they have depth to them then you have a problem. I work at a machine shop and we rebuilt some sort of machine for the paper mill that had a similar problem. The wear pattern around it was uneven. The guy that worked on it decided it was caused by the shaft being unbalanced and also discovered that the bearings would stick at higher speeds causing them to grind instead of roll. But i don't know if that would be the problem on your car. Added Maybe their is something, like a small metal shaving or something loose in there causing damage.
