| Amateur STI Driver | hello, the car is only about a month old 2007 sti, and i had the shift changed to short shifter from kart boys with tic brushings. whenever i let go of the gas pedal, (with gear in) the car should slow down with "some" degree of noise, but the car is making horrible grinding noise, as if metals are seriously scratching and grinding. this applies to gears from 1-2-3-4. especially at 3 and 4. i had the shifter installed by a mechanic and everything is working fine, this is the only mod i have done the the car at the moment. can anyone tell me how to get rid of this grinding noise when i shift down or letting gas off current gear? | STI Driver | I don't think there's a problem. It's not really metal grinding, it's just the gears spining. These noises weren't there before b/c of the rubber bushings, but since you changed them to the tic bushings, all those nvh comes through into the cabin. driving in 2nd gear going at around 15mph and let off the gas the it should be quite pronounced. It should be less noisy in 3rd and 4th though. |

| Professional STI Racer | i used to have grinding noises when i downshifted from 5th to 4th. just make sure when your slowing down downshift into the gear under 1 grand and make it as smooth as possible. mine used to grind everytime i slide it in there but after a little practice and smoothness it downshifts so smooth now. |

| Professional STI Racer | just take it slow and it should smooth out. dont slam the gears and when youd downshift make sure its smooth. dont the bushings make it smoother and easier to shift or no? |

| Amateur STI Driver | shifting gear feels so great, i love it. i was thinking something went wrong while doing the mod, just scared that is all, i guess nothing is wrong with the car. thanks alot guys. if, that is IF there is potential problem, what could it be? i might take it to the dealer and tell them "i think such and such is wrong with the car" to see waht they say |

| STI Driver | the transmission is very strong, but that doesn't mean it's not breakable. The occasiona gear grind is ok (when you try to shift without disengaging the clutch), just don't make it a habit. The thing that's most destructive is mis-shifts into a lower gear than intended. meaning if you are in 4th with the rpm at 6k and you go to shift into 5th but accidentally shift into 3rd. Not only is the bad for your engine but it's also not good for the tranny. Also, when you are down shifting, try not to just jam it in gear, especially for 2nd and 1st. 2nd can be hard to get into and 1st will almost be impossible. double clutching is a good thing to do on the down shifts, to help out your synchros for less drive-line lash. |

| Spec C Club | ickevin does the noise get faster when u increase speed? and when u slow down the noise slows down also and completely disapears when u are stopped? does 5th or 6th gear still produce the same noise but a little more clearer? if any of these applies i think your problem might be the reverse lockout cable rubbing on the spinning drivetrain... easiest way to confirm this is to take the shift boot off completely go for a rid put it in one of the gears that produces the noise and take your finger and pull up the reverse lockout cable from where it goes down into the rubber boot and down to the bottom of the car. if thats the case then u need some zip ties to fix this ... hope this helps .. if u need me to explain better pm me |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2004 Trader Rating: (11) | yea he said while he lets off the gas...downshifting grind is usually related to cold/bad/wrong fluid.. but i dont know wtf you mean while decelerating. This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |
