| Lurker | So I have been reading a lot on how sti's rear axle will break after some hard launches. Does this apply if you launch correctly? Or in general? Is there anything you can do to assure that the rear axles don't break (of course you can not launch at all, but where is the fun in that)? Like aftermarket parts? I was just wondering because I might get a sti, but I wanted to know the pros/cons before getting one. Thanks This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |

| Super Moderator | If you plan on launching it, plan on breaking it. If you cant afford to break it, dont launch it. There are aftermarket axles, but would you rather replace the rear diff? How about the center diff? I would rather replace the axles than a diff myself. |

The common answer to this is slip the clutch and dont dump it. But like 520 said.. run a search. There are a lot of threads on this. Good luck |

IWSTI Addict since: Jan 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | i used to have a wrx for three years before my STi which i used to launch a lot...rev to 5000 and pretty much drop the clutch and i never broke anything...except i was a noob at the track and did not slip my clutch the first time i went...the one thing i had to get replaced was my 1st gear synchro which was done under warranty work at the dealer...but remember i did not have close to the amount of torque on the wrx as i do on the sti now, nor did i have sticky tires to put more stress on the drivetrain; those RE92s would spin like nothing lol........so i think you should be fine...just dont rev it to 6500 and drop the clutch, besides, slipping the clutch should be faster anyway on the awd...your clutch is dog poo, now pretend you stepped all the way in it, and you were ilke "ughhh" and you took your foot up slowly to see what you just stepped in ![]() and, there are a lottt of threads on this Last edited by STI_818; 03-28-2007 at 12:28 PM. |

| Spiteful Old Codger | Launching is about getting power down to the ground rapidly and effectively. In order for that to happen, a number of variables have to be balanced. There's going to be some slip at the clutch and some at the tire. There is also going to be some substantial stress borne by the drivetrain. Ballistic force is not going to make your launch faster. In fact, it will likely slow you down. Ballistic force dramatically increases the likelihood of breaking something. Ever watch guys who bounce off their ligaments when they chin, bounce the bar off their sternum when they bench or rebound dynamically out of the bottom of a squat? That's the kind of **** you want to avoid. Ask someone who's strong and over 40. When you set up the launch, KEEP EVERYTHING TIGHT AND FOCUS ON DIRECTING THE FORCE EFFECTIVELY. Start out by erring on the side of prudence and work up to 'just enough'. Power is a wonderful asset, but technique bats last. You can, as they say, "take that to the bank". |
