Default 07 STi Tranny Ratios Vs 04-06

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone knew what the max speeds in each gear are for the 04-06 STi and then the 07 STi. I know that the gears in the 07 are longer...I just wanna get an idea of how much. Personally, I think I'd like the shorter ones better, since I love to row through gears! Feel free to give your opinion about shorter vs longer gears. Thanks all!

Default Maximum Speeds - 2005 STi

From the Owner's Manual:

Maximum allowable speeds

The following tables show the maximum speeds that
are possible with each different gear. The tachometer’s
needle will enter the red area if these speeds are
exceeded.
With the exception of cases where sudden acceleration
is required, the vehicle should not be driven with
the tachometer’s needle inside the red area. Failure to
observe this precaution can lead to excessive engine
wear and poor fuel economy.

Gear mph (km/h)
1st 35 (57)
2nd 55 (88)
3rd 73 (118)
4th 96 (154)

Hope this helps!

I like the longer gears better. Shifting too much slows you down and now the 1/4 mile can be finished without shifting to 5th. Also, gas mileage is said to be better in the 07s than the 04-06. The longer gears in the 07 is one of its major strong points. Rowing through the gears? You can still do that if you really want... you just have some more space up top

I personally like the closer gears better because I enjoy having peak power a shift away. And I dont drag race a car that was meant to handle. Drag racing is almost as much fun as lighting off bottle rockets.

I've yet to drag race the car and I probably never will. I bought it for road courses on the weekends and my daily driver otherwise. I've never had a problem getting to a gear with peak power... the ratios aren't THAT different where you'd have to worry about looking around for optimum power... they just give you more leg room up top and less shifting in daily driving situations.

The gear ratios of the 07 will be helpful in autocrossing, just no sure if the other chances will negate the good.

Unless you've driven both how can you compare? The 07 gear ratios improve the drivabilty, especially for the daily driver. And lets face it, a majority of the cars on this board are used for just that.

Personally I don't understand people that buy STI's for drag racing. These cars weren't designed for that...

to tell you the truth the difference is not that huge between 07 and the past.... but i really like 2nd gear in the sense that it pulls pretty hard all the way to just shy of 60, and 3rd still keeps pulling up to like high 70's i think.

also consistently i get 200 miles on each tank right as the gas light turns on... and one time i got up 220 but was basically running on vapor. Keep in mind this is all on city driving... and i dont drive for fuel economy

From a non-mechanical owner, what all would be involved in changing out the ratios in the 06 to those from the 07?
