IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2003 Trader Rating: (0) | was reading one of the import mags and i came across something called "dog gears". i think it was in SCC. well, for only $6500 you to can get the strength of straight cut gears and the added performance of clutchless shifting. anyone else read this? i can't remember the Co. that sells them, but it did say they're available for the STI. | Junior STI Driver | i just have to clairify that there is a difference between power shifting and shifting without the clutch power shifting is when you don't lift off the gas pedal when you shift gears and it is hard on just about everything. typically only do this for drag racing when you are slamming the gears. clutchless shifting is when you match rpms to let the gear out and then revmatch to get back into the next gear. If done PROPERLY it won't put any excess wear on anything. I stress properly because if not done right it will wear the syncros and you could bang up the engagement teeth. I can clutchless shift just about any manual car i can get behind the wheel of, so i speak from experience. *sequential trannys also can clutchless shift but thats a whole nother can of worms. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2003 Trader Rating: (0) | sometimes i think people like to read the very last post and then let loose. if you read the first post of the thread it clearly states clutchless shifting through the use of what is known as a dog box, or dog gears. i had never really read anything on them until i saw an ad for them in SCC. speaking of syncros when refering to dog gears is fruitless, as what is apparently known as dog rings replace the syncros. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2003 Trader Rating: (0) | It's important for people with stock gears to know about this stuff too, there's no reason to restrict this topic to talking about just dog gears.... lots of the best topics on this forum get started by accident. |

| Lurker | Typically in a race application the clutchless down shifting is done by someone that is "left foot braking" and the up shift is still clutched lightly for the speed issue. You rarely ever use a clutch in a big rig except for full stop and initial start up. Nothing to it, you just need a good touch. It is ugly feeling when you miss though.........
