okay, so i recently installed an exhaust and downpipe on my car about 3 days ago ... yesterday my CEL came on and am on my way to fixing that... now today i took a ride up to north jersey and was joy riding on 287 with a friend in his type-s... we started racing and took it up to about 130 mph and then my exhaust started to pop. it did it about 3 times, 2 times in a row... my boyfriend says i'm detonating... but how so if i didn't do much to my car yet... is this popping noise detonation? and if so why?... did this happen to anyone that has installed an exhaust and downpipe? would like some info... thanks! :P

No, that's not detonation...that sounds like backfiring. Don't know how common it is with exhaust+dp, but it's probably harmless. Does it happen under throttle or when you let off?

Is is possible you're having boost creep? Do you have a boost gauge? The CEL could be due to overboost. If that's the case, it's a serious problem that needs to fixed by porting the wastegate.

Default how about this one

Popping isn't detonation. The sound clip I was given of detonation sounded like BB's being rapidly fired into a metal can of some sort.

i say you had boost creep, my friend has downpipe only and got creep around 130-135mph at full throttle in 6th. did the car stop pulling when it started to backfire like u just hit a speed limiter?

Yeah, sounds like boost creep. Port the wastegate like Thermobox mentioned.

With a highflow exhaust in a lot of cars you will get popping when you lift off the throttle. Do you have a boost gauge? If your boost creeps up to a certain point the ECM will basically cut power which is probably what caused the popping.

no i didn't buy a boost gauge yet... gauges are my next purchases... i just spent a lot of money on the first package... but it'll be on the way... by any chance, has anyone put on a blow-off valve on their car yet? i heard on the STI the blow-off valve is mounted on the intercooler.

Default Addition to Air Box Hack Mod - more air(?) and more sound

Yes... well since you dont have a boost gauge I'd recommend not flooring it in 4th gear or more unti lyou find out if you're boost creeping or not (for safety reasons). I have the Worx Tuning dual stage BOV. Yes the BOVs go on the intercooler . Very easy install and some pretty good performance increase if you are becoming more and more modified.

Robert~
