I think valet didn't understand how to get into reverse and they just forced it in and broke the reverse lockout.
Well, that's certainly happened to people before. you need to slide under the car and see what the attachment point for the reverse is doing. Post pics of what position it's in when at rest, and when reverse is pulled.

Also post pics of the washer for the front stay. If that rotates out of the retainer tab the lockout will be wonky.

Thanks! I will get those up as soon as I can get under my car. I am not sure what the "washer for the front stay" is, but I will look it up I guess.

Wow. This really pissed me off. I may be over reacting because I am stressed out from having the broken shifter, but this was just unnecessary. I live in manhattan, and unless I want to street park and have my car stolen, I really don't have a choice but to park in a garage (which are all Valet in manhattan). I try to come in and out during slow hours to avoid needing to have someone else park it for me, however, the garage always has cars coming in and out. Occassionally, they need to move my car when I am not there. I don't like it, but thats the way it is. I am pretty friendly with almost everyone that works there and they all know to take car of my ride. I think it was a garage-valet-attendant noob that broke it. Needless to say I am pissed. I am also friendly with the garage owner (who charges me 1/2 price). I can't really complain. Rant done. Thanks for nothing.

it's a big washer that retains the front shifter stay. you can't miss it. the lockout cable attaches to it, and that's where the adjuster for the cable tension is. If it has spun out of position then the lockout will act odd. Check out the Kartboy 6mt front stay instructions on scoobymods as it has some good pics on how it's supposed to look.

I didn't think anybody in the city actually owned a car. I'd still be scared to see what 1/2 price parking is like there.

I wasn't trying to piss you off, just making a comment that I'm very concerned when other people drive my car. A lot of people abuse their equipment, especially if it is someone else's performance car. I do not abuse my car and for the most part don't trust other people to drive it.

Here's a pic courtesy of Peaty:
^^^ Is the threaded piece with the 2 adjustment nuts supposed to be 1 piece or 2? Mine is in 2 pieces. It looks broken on my car. Right where all the washers goes. I can see a section of the cable if I pull the cord hard enough in either direction. I am 99% sure this thread tube is supposed to be one continuous and that it must have broken (either by valet forcing it in reverse or by me trying to adjust the nuts the wrong way). See pics from mine below. Did I flat out break this or does it just need to be tightened up?

Looks broken to me, but then again I've never had to completely take it apart to that extent. Pull the assembly out and have a look to see if you can get it back together. If not, then you need to order a new one.

I am with ya on that man. I don't let anyone drive the STi. If anyone ever asks I usually just tell them....." Sure....if you wanna pay the insurance and car payment on it then I'll let ya drive it" That pretty muchs ends that converstaion....LMAO.

Subaru confirms, it's broken. $48 + 2 hours. Oh well.
