Now please bear in mind I have no clear understanding of this.

The STi has nice brembo rear disc brakes and that is what is used when you pull the emergency brake (right?)

So, if I go nuts and start E-brake turning everywhere, assuming I'm not arrested or crash the thing what am I doing to the car? What am I breaking? What wears when I do this?

Lets say I found I nice open empty parking lot where I could practice E-brake turning until the car broke. Do I have to let something cool between attempts? Other then brake pads and tires am I destroying anything?

Thanks for the experts' replies!

I don't wanna read that whole post! Are you crazy, JK. Not sure what exactly happens in the center diff. However, all your really doing is applying the rear brakes with a cable. Bad on your car, yes, bad on the tires, absolutely, will you be able to drive away, yes. It'll beat the crap out of your car but I don't think you'll break anything.

dont forget that all the e-brake actions you see on WRC tv is that they have an electronic disconnect to the rear driveline. so essentially, when they pull the e-brake, it temporarily disconnects the rear driveline, applies the brakes and you make those funky turns. soon as you release, the driveline re-connects... cool.

The STi is essentially the same. I believe the DCCD goes in full open mode once the e-brake is pulled.

I've used ebraking all winter long and have yet to see any ill effects. I don't think it's a problem for this car.

You are correct and this is well documented in the owners manual.
The car is in fact designed and setup to be used in just such a way.
No damage will occur in an STi but don't go doing this in any other AWD car be it WRX, Legacy or DSM as you will fock up your center diff.

In the STi there is a cutout switch built into the e-brake assy that lets the DCCD ECU know its been pulled. The DCCD will then _automatically_ go to full open regardless of what setting you had the DCCD set to be it AUTO or manual. When you set the parking brake back to off (let it go) the DCCD senses this and automatically returns to the state/setting it was in previously. This is all seamless and instantaneous, just like in the WRC cars. Agaisn read the OM as its detailed multiple times there.
